Are you using any filter in "ffdshow"? Try hiding all filters if you was using someone.

Could you tell us more info about that video file and your system configuration? You can send us info about video file you are trying to play using "MediaInfo", maybe the best video container information extractor.

Meanwhile, you can try disabling SVQ1 and SVQ3 codecs in "ffdshow" video configuration (step 4) instead of using "libvacodec".

See you later

you can also download radlight filter manager and set merits for your directshow filters. This way you can set a high merit for CoreAVC and a normal Merit for FFDshow. This way you are making sure that CoreAVC will be used over FFDShow for h.264 decoding.

no luck here. i set coreavc higher than ffdshow, rebooted, but it's still using it. i think my issue is that ffdshow won't ignore h.264 files, even though i have told it to.

Hi Koach

You didn't give us your system configuration (CPU, GPU and monitor resolution basically) so, on viewing info about the container, I must say that to play a 1280x720 pixel at 26Mbps is a lot!!!! Typically, H.264 movies at 1280x720 with 6 audio channels have between 6 and 10Mbps.

Where did you get that file?

You can test HD movies running fine like these you can download in ...
http://www.apple.com/trailers/

My modest HTPC can play them, but losing frames and with sound unsynchred, so your HTPC should not have any problem on playing them.

See you

CPU is an AMD 3800+ dual core. video card is an NVidia 6150. 1280 x 720 is my resolution. i can play the movuie fine when i turn all of my ffdshow filters off, and use quicktime alternative. but for some reason, ffdshow is applying its filters to this, even though i have set them to disabled.

i made the file myself. i have a 1080i HD camcorder, and i imported it into iMovie, and exported it to 720p.

HD trailers from quicktime play fine as well.

ok try this
1) Unistall ffdshow
2) Reboot your PC (not need actually but do a reboot just in case)
3) open radlight and check if you have the MPEG4 ffdshow decoder under directshow filters or any other ffdshow related decoder.
4) Open your h264 file using WMP and check the file properties. WMP is an easy way to see which DirectShow filters are used during playback.

and let us know what happened.

By the way your PC is more than capable of playing any HD format enocded with MPEG2/VC1 on any resolution 720p/1080i and 1080p.

dunno about mpeg4 HD files like mp4 on 1080i or p those are very resource intesive. You should be just fine with 720p.

something else as a side note. after a lot of testing i am not using ffdshow anymore cause it does install decoders for too many things which i dont really like other than the mpeg4 decoding. So now i just install Kopei's xvid decoder only for mpeg4 xvid decoding.

IMHO, you must continue using "ffdshow", cause as you said " it's better, but still not there." and it is better to get a good GNU codec pack like ffdshow than to install 5 or 6 different codecs. But I am agree with pannivas about reducing movie resolution to 720. I am sure you will play then your movies fine.

You could even do another test. There is a linux distro called "GEEXBOX" that you only need to (optionally) configure and burn in a CD. Then you can boot with that CD and magically you will able to play any movie container without install anything on your computer.

It is a good option if there is no any way to play your 1080p movies smoothly on Windows.

    I got a simple answer:

    Install Quicktime 7.01
    Install Quicktime ALternative

Now, QT alternative warns that QT is installed, continue, and install ONLY the Directshow filter for QT movies.

And voila, I can view .mov HD 720p files. I got a AMD 3200+ and a 720P gives me a 75% cpu load
