Finally, I treated myself to a shiny new NAS: the Synology DS 410J.
I'm planning to record to one of the disks in my NAS, but couldn't succeed last night when trying to set it up.
To start off I first installed the NAS with one HDD. I mapped 2 volumes: 'Recordings' and 'Movies'. I then mapped them as Y (Recordings) and Z (Movies) driveletters on my HTPC and selected the Y disk in TVserver config as recording disk.

THen I started MP, went to the epg and chose a channel to watch. Then I hit the record button, the message reporting that a recording started popped up...but when going to the recorded tv section, nothing was recording...also nothing was shown in tvhome - tab:now recording...but i couldn't watch tv because the tv card was occupied! Only restarting the tv service in tv server config or taskmanager could free the tv card again...
When I hit the record button and nothing was recorded there was no errormessage or anything. It looked like the recording started, but nothing was actually started...

So in conclusion, everything went ok up until the actual recording
Any advice?
Are there other people having this bug or problem?
Am I missing something? a setting, workaround, or option...anything?
Does MP support recording to a mapped network drive in a NAS?

... you have to run the TVservice under an account with network rights - per default it uses the system default user - that only has rights for local drives.
So make sure, you change the usercontext to an account, that has full privileges to the NAS / network drive.

OK, thanks! So even though I mapped these network drives as local Y and Z drives, I also need to change my account.
But in Windows Explorer it's no problem to copy to and from these mapped drives...
So even though it's possible to use these drives in Windows, it's not possible to use them in MP before I change my account somehow?
Any advice on how to change the privileges of my default account?

Lets say you are signed into Windows as "kkendall" (even if there was no actual sign in, you are still a regular user) TVServer will be running under the System account as it is a service.

If you open Windows Task Manager you can see what you are running, click "Show processes from all users" and you will then see TVServer running under the System account.

Those mapped drives you created were only mapped for your user ("kkendall" for example) not the System account.

A sinple thing to try is instead of browsing through Computer for the recording folder, scroll down to Network, select the NAS and then navigate to the shared drive from there. that should give you a path that looks something like "\\server\share\recording_folder".

Thanks a lot! I'll try this asap.
In MP this should be properly handled though. Now it's getting all souped up.
Now when you try to record, the card gets occupied, a message appears saying the recording has started...but it's not. You also need to remove the recording from the schedule, restart MP and restart the tv service before the tv card is released again. Also if you schedule 3 recordings on the same time in the above case, TV server config is saying 3 cards are recording, when there is only one card in the system! Like I said, quite a mess!

A proper way for MP should be a popup notification that the recording cannot start because of read/write rights of the specified recording disc/folder and the recording should be cancelled. Something like that.
Should I make a separate bugreport for it so it can be fixed in a next release?

It's not a bug, you just have to make a small change before it'll work properly.

Hmm, that didn't work.
Still the exact same result when trying to record.

I hope I can figure out how to give tvserver that is running under the System account the same privileges as a user under a Regular account... Because that is what I am supposed to do now right?

Right-click Computer, manage, services, find TV service, right click on it, select properties, "Log On" tab. Change "Log on as" to the account you want to use.

I didn't say that the fact that I need to change something before it will work properly is a bug.

In order to change the popup from "Recording of jadajada has started" to "Recording cannot start because of jadajada", MP needs a change. I consider the wrong informing contents of the popup as a bug.
