I was actually considering MeediOS or XMBC. I'm willing to put up with some tweaking if I see I like what I'm getting.

I'll check SageTV too. Thanks!

No tv in Meedios or XMBC. they are both looking at writing plugins to interface to the mediaportal tv server, so timeshifting will be there anyway

Not even watching live tv from a tuner card? Really? How hard can that be???

Great. I had just written a lengthy post about this, but the forum ate it.

I'll just post the short version which is: If I can use the crappy soft provided by the vendor, what's the point of Media Portal? I want to use the same program for everything, that's the point of it. And the crappy program that comes with my tuner already does live tv and some video and music playback.

You don't seem to know a whole lot about how software works (as evidenced by the comment "Not even watching live tv from a tuner card? Really? How hard can that be???") and yet you're copping a bit of a 'tude, which the developers of this free program probably don't appreciate. I'm just pointing this out for you so you don't wonder why you aren't getting any helpful responses.

I'll try to give a helpful response anyway even though you probably won't listen: What two devs have now tried to explain to you is timeshifting is thoroughly integrated in to TV Server 3, to the point where taking it out or disabling it isn't an option because too many things depend on it. You're free to disagree with this design decision but that isn't going to change anything. You're also free to download the source and start work on your own branch of the software that does what you want it to as well (after all, how hard can it be?).

Or, you can look for alternatives. The problem you are discovering is, there aren't any, not when it comes to TV integration. XBMC is fantastic but it's support for live TV or EPG is non-existent and will be for some time, it's just not their focus. Same with MeediOS and Boxee. In fact, you're pretty much stuck with:

    MythTV (good luck)

BeyondTV ($100 to start with, addons are more, for a program that is sub-par in every way to Media Portal)

SageTV (slightly cheaper, otherwise same as BeyondTV)

Windows Media Center - probably your best bet, if you have Vista Ultimate/Home Premium already, has some nice movie management addons too, I mean, it's not as nice as Media Portal IMHO but it's not bad.

Of the above the only one that I know of that lets you completely avoid using a timeshift buffer is SageTV.

Or - and here is a crazy thought - you could find out what is causing you issues with timeshifting (since so many of us don't have any, hell I am streaming off two HDPVR's for live TV) and work on that. Otherwise, good luck, and if you find something better by all means share.

ixian: You're perfectly right. I apologize if I come out aggressive or something like that, it's not my intention.

I realise now that the alternatives are not better than MP or are nonexistant. I also did know that by using TV Server 3 as the only tv engine there's no way to have live tv only.

What it wouldn't hurt is to still have the choice to be able to use the old engine for us users which can't possibly get a good performance out of timishifting tv or don't have a use for those extended features of TV Server (which of course, is an amazing program on its own, no doubt of that).

As to my issues, I've followed the guides posted here to properly configure the tv and it kinda works, sometimes. It hangs up and stutters a lot. In any case, this is the only aspect of my "HTPC" that works worse than average, and that's the source of my complain. It's a dated machine I can't ask that much of (a Celeron D), but I built it from stuff I had lying around and it exceeded my expectations by far regarding performance. I mean, yeah, I could start dishing out money like crazy on it, but that was not the aim of my htpc project. Even so, I've had to spend quite some money on peripherals for it

What could be causing the problems? My HDD could be faster, the processor itself could be faster, I could have more RAM, etc. I do think that it can all be solved by putting more money into the system, of course. But my idea is to make the most of the system I have.

I don't know, I might end up reinstalling 1.0.1 to use the old engine (in my update to 1.0.2 it appeared as not available). It would be a shame though.

The problem with giving the choice to use the old engine is that being that it's built in to the client it's old code they'd have to keep around, and make sure it didn't break with updates, or worse break updates itself, and on and on. I imagine the reason they finally decided to ditch it with 1.02 is exactly that - it broke something, or outright broke itself and no one has the time to fix it, especially as it's old news.

That wrong, you need 1.0.2 installed, 1.0.1 is broken for the internal TVEngine, just do not accept the watch tv prompts in the installation and you will then have access to the old TVEngine via MP config\Television.

Good! I'll try going with that. I might just try to uninstall TV Server, though I'd prefer if there was an alternativ, being able to switch or something.

    Thanks.
