I doubt it will be set as standard, but as optional (the same will apply for writing info to an "nfo" file). The devs deserve a little more credit then that :D
Furthermore, some people want to have centralized support. This will probable mean that any IO will have to go by network first...
Again, a very personal setting and therefor (probable) configurable ;)

True true, I'm just a bit cautious because I love the plugin. The first few version were totally oblivious to networks shares. For instance: if a share was unavailable, the whole database got deleted. Again, just cautious :D

Seems to me like what you guys are really asking for in a round about way is better multi-seat support, which is definitely planned. I think it's unlikely that we would ever save cover or backdrop images in the movie folder though, generally we try to maintain a hands off policy regarding your movies, folders, and the contents there-in.

also if u copy movies to a friend it has all the import data/images associated with the movie.
if you reformat your system drive and then reinstall moving pictures it's all there without having to backup..

I like the fact that MP leaves my folders alone and stores all metadata separately. It theoretically makes it easy to add something like centralized db support and sharing the metadata.

My ultimate wish would be for something like the following -

    - identifying movies (and tv shows and other files) by unique crc hash (e.g. used by opensubtitles.org). The same movie stored in any naming scheme would always resolve to a unique id.

    - the db would also have a mapping so e.g. rips of the same movie using different codecs would map to one entry.

    - a global server which would store metadata linked to the unique id. Over time this would become more and more complete as people add more files and info. Each local MP client would cache parts of this db locally, and submit updates. This would live very nicely with thetvdb api.

    - the server need not be maintained on a dedicated host (with all its costs). It could easily be a p2p model.

If we had this, then a new user who installed MP would almost instantly have complete rich metadata for all their media, without needing to rename/organize. She would also be able to see what other movies are out there (like in offline mode).

Then we could add some nice features such as 'most watched movies by MP community' etc.
