thanks for the tip, but I think I have got it all sorted now. I was running Vista for about 4 hours before rolling back - (too slow based on my 1GB RAM.)
I ended up removing ATI CCC and using 8.1 drivers only. Codec was CoreAVC and using graphedit.exe, found the optimum settings for the codec. Then in regedit, copy the settings from graphedit.exe folder to the mediaportal.exe folder in registry and then ran MP. All is working fine. NOTE - hardware accel does not work for my HD TV Streams as it is MPEG2. It was all a CODEC issue which was cauing my issues in the end.
