Winavi is great for converting iso to divx files meaning you lose very little quality although it does have a price tag.

I do not call converting 350 ISO's trivial... I just tried converting one of my ISO's to the basic audio_ts, video_ts folders and it does the same thing - it does not come back to the main menu when done. Is this normal also?

And using the AUDIO_TS / VIDEO_TS method shortens the loading time of the movie. I find that loading an .iso takes a couple of seconds while letting MediaPortal start the film using the .ifo in VIDEO_TS is superfast. It's really better.

Agreed. It is faster, but... it stops at the end and does not return to the menu, correct?

I found a workaround that doesnt give me everything but at least the ISO stops after it is done playing. I guess I will have to consider a new format or a new HTPC software or go back to XBMC.

That last "correct?" there seems like an assumption. And assumption is the mother of all f*ckups, so you should make sure you're right instead. The last time I played a movie from a VIDEO_TS-folder it went back to the dvd menu after finishing, just like a standalone DVD would. Is that not what you want? Pressing 'stop' on the remote in that position is nothing but simple logic to me and should be to any girlfriend/wife/mistress as well.

    wow... nice response...

I just tried a video_ts movie and it stops at the end with a black screen and does NOT go back to the menu. I have tried this both on an XP and Vista machine same results using the 12/31/07 SVN build.

If I load Nero on my machine, I am assuming because it has Nero Showtime, that if I turn of Daemon tools to play my ISO's it plays using a Nero codec. Once it is done playing it goes back to the menu. However, I lose a couple things with this workaround:

    • Cannot get subtitles to work, which is a potential deal breaker for me
    • Cannot use the next/last chapter buttons on my remote - however the up/down keys apparently do the same thing as next/last chapter - so that works for me

I really wanted to get MediaPortal to work and was planning on donating some dough to the project... I guess i will look into other formats. Maybe this can be a workaround until I can find a format that I can turn on/off subtitles while watching a movie. Dont get me wrong, this is a great product... I just thought that it was more mature than XBMC in regards to playing vobs and ISO's

I am a little lost here. When you use Nero, are you using it inside MP? How does MP know to mount the ISO with Nero instead of Daemon?

One other note: I don't think that the up/down is the same as chapter skip keys. I believe up/down is actually "big step" - I think it's around 10 minutes. There's no configuration to set what Big Step Forward/Backward are.

It still seems to me that this is a pretty trivial reason to not use MP. As I mentioned before, even Front Row can't handle ISOs. I think you'll be hard-pressed to find this much functionality that handles everything exactly the way you want it to be handled.

I dont know how MP knows how to use Nero, that is beyond me. All i know is if I turn off DAEMON tools and play an ISO with nero NOT installed, nothing happens. When I install nero with DAEMON tools disabled and i play an ISO the movie plays and when it is finished it comes back to the main menu. Now... I tried to load WinDVD instead of Nero and that didnt work, so something is special with Nero.

XBMC does exactly what I want! however, the xbox is getting old and I want to be able to use HD when I get an HD set. So for right now XBMC does everything I want and need. It can play ISO's AND have them go back to the menu when each ISO is finished. I can add 50 ISOs to a playlist and have all 20 ISO's play right after each other. The netgear EVA8000 can play ISO's and when they finish it comes back to the menu, so I guess I was figuring this was normal but apparently not.

so yes, there is a device out there that does everything I want right now but it is old equipment. since it works I should stick with it but I figured i would give MediaPortal a shot, it is nice package and i may but i am having some growing pains!
