Why not create a shortcut to quick setup guide along with the other shortcuts created during install?

You mean in windows Start Menu - like this? Already there. I doubt most existing users would want a desktop shortcut added.

yup it does open quick setup guide maybe in the past it didn't
Yeah it was changed in 1.2.0 beta - it used to open a file.

I have to agree with this guys post. I've been struggling to get MP to work for the past 4 days, i've been posting on the forum for help and you guys have been great but your suggestions are no where in the instructions/help guide and I would of never thought to of done it. Even with your help i'm still getting a very laggy image on SD channels and I have no idea why.

Other software programmes i've used are more automatic in their setup procedure, and i'd like that to be implemented somehow. Those with the technical know-how can then fiddle with the settings/codecs but us simple folk don't have a scooby!

Well, if i wanted something out of the box i just follow the stream and buy something like apple-tv or something. But u know what medaportal so special. It is exactly why you uninstalled it. Being able to fiddle around and exploring every single aspect of a program that u really need is awsome! And when you are finally done, you most likely have a mediaportal that no one else have! That you can be proud of to call your own. (as you made skins, setup and everything to your personal style)

Thats the only reason i dont go XBMC or anything else. I have been using this software for years now, and i love it more and more. Everytime i have friends over they tell me "I wanna have a TV with this stuff aswell!"

THANK YOU MEDIAPORTAL FOR NOT MAKING IT EASY (it kinda is easy though) - I HATE MY IPHONE -

Sorry for bad english... Merry christmas!!

And the prime reason is there are no clear instructions how to use it. Ok there's a wiki, but just a simple pdf would be nice!
The second reason is it's massive and requires the installation of windows media player (which I do not use) and other things.
I primarily wanted to use it to stream video files from a netgear stora and a proliant microserver here. I have no use for the tv function.
This I can do with videolan player
I've downloaded a upnp plugin which does nothing.
All there appears to be is a configuration page or the user interface which looks quite nice I suppose if you like that sort of thing but doesn't seem to contain suitable options.

I would definitely advise asking the questions. The beauty of this forum is the people who matter actually respond with real solutions to problems. They are great people who offer outstanding advice. I've been using MP for years and would never look anywhere else - not only because it is great software, but also because I know I'll get great help. Don't under estimate the forums to air your frustrations and ask the questions :)

You have a valid point there matonking - and we are trying to improve our documentation, but seriously how many free open source apps provide a complete, up-to-date wiki? Even many commercial apps don't. We are playing catch up because for the first few years it took all our time to get MP to the level it is at now, but it IS our goal to provide what you want. If you can tell me how to get developers and geeks to write anything in a wiki instead of repeating it over and over in the forums, I would be more than grateful. :p

For many users (like me!) MP not only provides perfect playback out of the box, but comparing it to other media centers even I can see how much better the quality is. However, IF you are one of the unlucky few where that does not work, then yes it can be quite complex trying to sort out the problem. In my experience there are so many factors in any user's setup that affect playback, it can take some time to solve.

We are CONSTANTLY trying to balance the needs of users like Distun - who really love being able to customize MP almost as if it was their own software - with the need new users have for quick, easy out-of-the-box setup. We don't have the resources Microsoft does, nor the advantage of our own EPG data like they do (even if it is crap in many places in the world ;)) So if anyone knows a magic way to do both, let us know and you can join the team and do it!

We are working towards that, as you will see in 1.3.0 with all the settings clearly and easily available within MediaPortal. But Rome wasn't built in a day, and it is through the incredible support of this amazing community, and indefatigable kindheartedness of the developers and team, that we have managed to get this far! We need your support and input to be able to solve such issues and make MediaPortal even better for everyone.
