Just to clarify, I found the settings you referred to, but it didn't fix my problem.

Maybe it's a video driver issue, as some files I can watch for hours with no problems

Yep that's nvidia drivers, some people have complained about video playback being affected with all drivers after 250.xx, some the 280.xx are definitely to be avoided as have memory leak, i'm running 290.56 beta, as the whql driver gives me constant tdrs with the nvidia drivers have just recovered message, go figure
