    now just have to sort out an alternative anti virus.

    Avast free is pretty good, just turn off any scanning of media folders, ie recording and timeshifting folders, I also exclude any MP Program\Data folders including mediaportal.exe, pretty flexible piece of security software.

    Thanks for the recomendation. I suspect that the MSE problem is a scanning issue, there is a link in the other thread that suggests at one point it got in a loop scanning itself, certainly in task manager it was eating up all the CPU resources. I was thinking of ditching MSE anyway so this is a good prompt to finally do so.

    I initially thought it might be linked to the changing of the channel numbers on Freeview which happened last Wednesday so spent hours retuning and checking settings. I should have known from experience that if something goes wrong out of the blue check the anti virus first.
