I'm very happy to report that my missing files have been found - they had been moved, I BELIEVE, as the result of my attempt to use Media Portal, but I have no way to prove it and if no other occurrence of this problem gets reported then I'm happy to assume that it was a one-off aberration specific to my system. I'm not inclined to apologize at this point given that the problem would not have occurred had I not attempted to try Media Portal. I'm, however, willing to concede that other users will be able to use MP software without this fault happening to them.

Lastly, I appreciate the help that you have tried to provide and I wish you good luck for the future.

Seeing that your files have been moved I would say the most likely scenario is that you accidentally dragged the folder into another folder in the "open folder dialog". Since this is a standard windows dialog it could have happened in ANY program that uses this dialog (word, outlook, etc...).

So you might want to reread your first post again and reconsider the apologizing part.

When I selected this folder it vanished along with all 47 titles - as far as I can tell THEY ARE ALL GONE! thanks to Media Portal! So PLEASE DIE I will never touch your software again.

Anything is possible, but I've been using computers for more than 30 years and haven't made a mistake like that before. In light of the outcome my initial post was a bit harsh, but I'd ask you to consider your reaction to the circumstances I faced.

Not sure what error code 40 is, but if it's "I screwed up" then yes.

I slept on it, and came to the conclusion that the screw-up occurred at my end, and may very well have been caused by my hand, so I apologize to one and all associated with MediaPortal for the remarks I made in my initial post, and I no longer think that media portal was in any way responsible for the temporary loss of my files. As an act of contrition I'll load up the latest version of MP and have a bash. If I'm impressed enough I may even write it up on my web log (hazen.co.nz). Thanks for your understanding,
