Media Portal Won't Speak to Server (3 Viewers)

I'm trying out a single seat set up. Install microsoft sql database. alter surface area config as advised. Install tv server, scan and configure, no problem. install media portal, do not configure, do not run. install media plug in (at this point, shortcut for TV server config disappears of desktop). install svn. then configure (including making sure media portal waits for tv server). type in name of host. run media portal. on selecting my tv, get asked to input name of host. When name of host is entered, get told unable to connect to TV server/unable to connect to database.

I've already done the neccesary fixes to get around any possible problems with xp sp2 as outlined in this thread

Many thanks in advance for any help on this - I've been trying to get it to work all day (erasing TVlibrary after each reinstall), it's very late and I'm at my wits end!

What instructions did you use? did you find some writen ones or use the videos, I found the videos very useful. also, make sure any firewalls are disabled (you can turn them back on later when it all works). did you install the management studio? can it connect to the SQL server? at some point you should have gor a prompt where you can put in the server name, server logon name and password, does the test buton their work?

I followed the order of installation suggested in the videos: installing TV server first and configuring it, then installing media player, then going back to the TV server installer and installing the TV Server plug in.

The management studio could connect to the SQL server fine, and the test connection that comes up when you start TV server works fine too, so there didn't seem to be any problem there. I've told the firewall which EXE files Media Portal and the TV server is using, but I might try reinstalling everything with the firewall disabled, test it, then see what happens when I switch the firewall on (if the system is working at that point). I'll also try today's revision.

Today's seems fine.

One thing it pointed out during install though, was no microsoft Visual Studio2005 installed, it was, but it was the older version installed by MP0.2.3.0 and needed to be updated to the new version (follow link in installer).

Not sure how much this effects things, but works fine here now.
