I am very pleased to read that the base of MP2 is still stiking with UPnP as base communicaion system.
It allows for such flexibility for not only plugings but also for stand alone support apps and mobile devices.
To bad that you are not aiming on a DLNA compatible sollution since there are so many devices that support this UPnP version that would make the MP 2 server a logical choice for so may people. But like you said I am sure people will work on that as soon as there is a public release ;)

Thanks for the update, I hope that once MP 1.1 is final all resources can focus on getting Mp 2 to a replacement state of MP 1.1 in no time :p

Will MP2 also use the Win7 libraries if you want instead of replicating everything win7 users already ahve there in a libary of it's own ?

I'd be happy just with the ability to add the video library to video's in MP2 though. but still proper support in the same vein as WMP, Zune and now even Spotify would be nice.

Well, UPnP AV specifies a framework of device and service descriptions together with data structures to be used in the audio/video communication. As far as I know, DLNA only makes that specification more precise. And to put the DLNA seal onto a product, you have to pay MUCH money (multiple thousand euros/dollars), which is simply too much for us. Unfortunately, it was not possible for me to get access to the concrete DLNA specification without paying their license fee.

I guess at the end, we will make our solution DLNA compatible as far as we know the specification, but avoid to buy the DLNA seal.

I think nothing speaks against a WMP library media provider... We'll see if it makes sense.

I think what HawkMan meant was Windows 7 libraries (joined folders), not the wmp library...

Win7 libraries do have ull database function with metadata and all that, not just joined folders(that'd be smart folders (a.k.a saved searches) which where introduced with Vista). WMP on windows 7 doesn't use it's own library, it uses the win7 liraries. in fact withthe added explorer library fucntionality, libraries are almost more powerful in explorer than in WMP.

But as I said, I'd be happy to be able to add them as joined folders as well. But frankly, it would make more sense for MP imho when on win7 to make use of the libraries that are already there and are just as powerful, instead of adding a secondary library.

Or maybe I'm the only one who thinks it's unecessary to have his media library duplicated across
    - internal windows library
    - MP
    - Foobar
    - SE X10 media app (unecessary since I don't use it anyway, but for the regular plug and play people it's probably better to use this)

I suspect someone could make a plugin that uses the Win7 liraries for media anyway, and someone probably will though :)

I'll use it anyway of course (not like there are any good alternative that does DVBC anyway :p), I just find it nicer and tidier if stuff plugsinto stuff allowing things to work together and share and nice and friendly like :p

Very true, I agree that the seal is not needed. But I do believe it requires you to provide a media serving service. And you mentioned earlier that it would not. But we will give it a try when there is a public beta. See if windows 7 can play music from it without the MP client or a UPnP thin client can. That would be awesome.

Do you have any credible links about an integrated Windows Library for meta data?

As far as i know most applications like WMC and WMP use the WMP Library which is saved here:
    C:\Users\<myniceloginname>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media Player

And sorry to say it but it's horrible! If you use FLAC, OGG or m4a/ AAC lossless you get crazy cause there's no easy way to support FLAC and OGG container format.

But i would support your idea in general, cause it's really stupid to use thousands of libraries for the same things...

Only my own experience. (I could probably find some if I bothered to look. the windows 7 libraries are essentially most of what the wold WinFS was going to be, a database on top of the filesystem)

Go to explorer and your music library for example. and in the upper right corner, you have sort by. by default it uses folder structure. if you use artist for example you get a very nice media library, and one that I feel is superior to the interface that WMP provides you. You can also tag or change tags directly in explorer in the bottom pane.

On windows 7, WMP should use this library. though it may have it's own library as well in parallell. But it shouldn't duplicate across them unless you make it.

Another good thing with the win7 libraries is if both computers run windows 7, or you have an updated windows search installed on XP/Vista and the media folder is indexed. Then the searching and such will be handled on the computer where the files are stored(on the same token, the libraries don't like you adding networked folders that don't have remote indexes to them.)

I must confess that I didn't deal with the Win 7 libraries yet. I'm on Win 7 only since some weeks. Until now, I only clicked the library folders away because it annoyed me as well as the "My pictures"/MyXXX in the older Windows versions. I guess I have to see what functionality they really added.
