Good to see. I was actually thinking about working on this tonight, been kinda busy lately. But as far as my skinning experience goes, i'm not sure what limitations i'm facing, but i think a lot of it is doable. I think i'll go for a XBOX Metro approach...
1. Is it possible to grab several fanarts to the (basic) home screen of movies, series etc i got in my db?
2. Can i display them resized instead of fullscreen?
3. Can i pick them based on IMDb-rate, date or unwatched status?
4. Can i grab other data to my home screen, such as weather, rss news etc.
I'll work on some mockups and a homescreen the next days. All feedback would be appreciated

Ok, i made a couple of mockups yesterday, and i personally think these look way better, and suits MP better. Still just ideas, and any input is very welcome

For me to continue with this, i would first of all need some input for skilled skinners about what limitations i'm facing here, what possibilities i've got and so on. I do have a lot of ideas for how to put this all together. At best, i could start with the basic part of skinning, but my xml knowledge is limited. I do think this could be a very nice and intuitive skin, but it does require a lot of work and creative solutions....

Yes to all these questions, though I think you'll need a custom plugin for some of the more advanced features.
- LatestMediaHandler and FanartHandler will be able to provide backdrops for random movies/series in database and also provide details and backdrops for the user's latest added movies/series/...
- Weather and RSS can be made available to the skin using the InfoService-plugin if I'm not mistaken
So a first limitation would be the need for a custom plugin to get the data you want from the various databases. (Don't know if you've got any programming experience but I'm sure there are tons of people willing to help around here.)
I think your second major limitation is going to be the horizontal 'swipe', i.e. going from movies to tv-series in your latest mockup. Sure, you could press the right-arrow until you reach the edge of the movies-page and then press it again to make it swipe to the series-page, but it wouldn't be very user friendly. To make this skin work, IMHO, you'd need to be able to do the swipe thing with one button press and I don't know for sure if this is possible. I'd suggest asking one of the skilled skinners about this.
Anyway, awesome skin idea, would love to see it happen.

Personally i wouldn't use the Windows 8 approach but more the look and feel of the upcoming XBox 360 Dashboard update...

Agree to disagree. There are several ways of solving this, but the way i imagine is like this. Ine the first picture where you see the promo of Transformers, Green Lantern and Matrix, you're not browsing the movies, but the category bar above it, such as movies, series, live tv etc. If there is a way to press arrow down at this point and highlight/execute one of the promoted videos(elements), that would be an awesome bonus. If not, then we'll just skip to the next image, where we got a coverflow of movies as default, tha way MS does it in Metro, but of course we can modify. And a arrow up there will bring you to the back button, and maybe a few more buttons, such as settings, layout etc. This is the first that came to my mind, and there might be other solutions as well. MS develops this for use with the xbox 360, and they got a way of navigating with the controller there, so doing a similar approach for us should be possible.

Cool to see you working with this, your approach seems more like your own twist of the Win8 Metro GUI to me. I see you fetch covers and filenames to the homescreen, that's cool. But can you get fanart instead of covers, and say imdb title instead of filename? And as a comment to your skin: to much going on. To many small options makes it kind of messy IMHO...
