Yeah I don't have an Xbox so I don't know how their controls work. Anyway, I hadn't thought of what you're suggesting and I agree that it's an acceptable solution (though I'd still prefer to be able to do it like i explained with the one button press )

These are (as far as I know) the plugins skinners use to get some detailed information and fanart into their skins, so that's what's already possible without writing a custom plugin.

I'm not part of the beta program for the new Xbox UI so I haven't tested it yet, but I imagine they'll use something like the index-finger buttons to swap between the categories with the controller. And with kinect you just do a swipe.

I live Hulk's idea to have the "tab-line" as the "main navigation line", this is similar to the way alot of skins do it already, in addition to that though I'll add a suggestion to use something like channel up/down or page up/down to skip between them aswell (if that's possible). That could reduce the button mashing if you 're in the lower half and want to jump to another "tab".
