    From BASS homepage:

"The BASS library is free for non-money making use. If you are not charging for the software and it has no other commercial purpose (eg. advertising/promotion), then you can use BASS in it for free."

So it is free if it is used for no commercial purpose... MP is not commercial.

I'm currently in contact with the BASS guys to confirm that MP's "donation" mechanism doesn't bump us into the "money making use" category.

I've had a look at BASS and FMOD and both seem comparable. BASS does appear to have support for a great number of audio formats.

I plan on putting together a test app to eval performance, features, stability etc.

A question for all of you ex-Meedio users: what kind of visualization support did Meedio provide?

I actually had a problem with meedio after they updated their BASS engine in their latest version. The high frequency sounds got distorted...... But otherwise it worked great!

About visualizations I used some in Meedio which can be found here:

    Meedio I freq distortions.

I think the distortions were a meedio issue not a bass issue. After around version 1.38 Meedio went downhill fast.

As to your questions as to who would pay
    1. Bass was embedded in the free version of Meedio (not sure you can do the same but maybe)

    2. I would be more than willing to pay a fee to get away from WMP9+ or winamp to use an embedded solution, but not everyone would and I do understand that.

    3. From my experience with Meedio, Bass worked much better than FMod ,and easliy supported the flac codecs

Thanks for the great response on this request. I am playing with MediaPortal now and like what you have done...

    Peace,

    JMS

I heard back from Ian at BASS and we *do* qualify for the free licensing. I played around with BASS for a couple or hours over the weekend and it works quite well. I'll be playing around with the BASS visualization stuff over the next few days but so far so good :D

As an alternative you should concider using http://www.fmod.org/, used it in another project. Damn it's so easy and powerful !

FMOD would be an excellent soultion also. It has similar licensing arrangements as BASS.

So it really comes down to which one is easier to implement and which one provides the largest file/codec support.

The reason I am so interested is my collection is all in flac format...

    Peace
