    Hi there,

A quick question (not sure if it has been asked before)...

Are the white bars (with Shift 1) accurate and useful - or should I just ignore them (used for detecting tearing??)

On my setup they are nice/parallel at times, then sometimes they seem stuttery/teared/juddery - but I have no dropped frames and the red/green/yellow lines are perfectly smooth

Those "tearing" test lines (not anymore so much about the tearing since they wont fill the whole screen and people are quite educated to use AERO on Windows 7 or Exclusive DirectX on XP) are accurate. If they judder / stutter / tear it meas that there is some playback issue. Those lines are moved exactly the same amount between every single frame (not possible to have a bug in such calculation :)). If the movement is not smooth then there is some issue - too bad that the lines itself cannot tell the source of the issue (it would be too easy :)).

    Hi there,

Thanks for such a speedy reply.

I was hoping you would say they werent accurate... now I'll have to spend ages trying to look into what could be causing the issue. ;)

From your experience, any ideas of what could cause them to tear randomly? Codec? Source? CPU?

I am running W7x64, ATI 5670, PDVD10, I have tried most the versions of Tony's dshowhelper - and it happens with them all - most the time they are fine (parallel, staright)

    Thanks,

    J.

On Windows XP - Enable DirectX Exclusive mode.

On Windows Vista / 7 - Enable AERO.

If those won't help then it might be even the display device itself (not all tv's have real refresh rate support so they can tear for example when 23.976 mode is used - I have a TV that doesn't officially support 23.976 but you can feed it with such display mode and the result is tearing since TV's internals are still working on 50Hz more).

Codec shouldn't be able to cause the tearing since the tearing bars are drawn to the video frame after the codec passes teh frame to EVR presenter.

Also GPU driver bug could be source for such, but it should show tearing even in EARO enabled desktop when moving around the windows.

    Hi Tony,
I watched a film and I often noticed a stutter... There was a microstutter but tedious..

I have attached the log and some screenshots...if you have time and if you want maybe you can have look..

    I'm using mp 1.2 beta.

I don't know but I noticed it some other video at 23.97 with same issues, could be 23.97 refresh rate a problem?

    :D

Try a different splitter and/or audio decoder i.e. is it better with Haali splitter ? - something is causing performance problems, the log shows long 'paint' times and the incoming sample queue getting low on data sometimes.

    Tony

I'm using now saf 6 with lavf splitter.
    I tried:

lavf splitter + lav audio decoder
lavf splitter + ffdshow audio decoder
    saf 5.0
    mpc-hc + ffdshow audio decoder..

same result...maybe I have to search in something else..

Haali splitter doesn't work for me very well, I have problem with some audio stream.

If I set MP to High CPU priority I get lots of dropped frames and fairly choppy playback. With it set to above normal it's about 98% silky smooth. Is there any reason for this?

What is the current version of this dll? It should be added to the first post :(
