MPExTuneCmd do not seems to execute the external command as it is supposed to. I am able to execute the command 'irtuner.exe 24' in a DOS command window from windows and get the command to send the channel number to settop box successfully. However, in MediaPortal, it does not succeed sending the channel number to the settop box. I do not see the change in the settop box. The TV image turns to a blank screen upon selecting this channel and the sound is lost. ie no video and sound, just a blank screen.

My setting in External Tab of Edit Properties of TV Channel for this channel in the TV Channels setup in MP is as follows:

  • Type - Received by external Settop Box
Input via - CVBS#2 (Question - what does CVBS means? I am feeding my settop box signal to the PVR card via a co-axial cable)
Channel number on settop box - 24

and in the MPExTuneCmd Setup 0.1 are:

  • External Command Executable - ....\irtuner.exe (this being the path to the exe location)
    External Command delimiter - #

MPExTuneCmd Plugin - no advice from anyone?

I have further investigated by trying various things and my conclusion is that either MPExTuneCmd is not working right OR I have not set it up right. (anyone can point me to documentation for MPExTuneCmd plug-in?)

The reasons are:

1. The irtuner.exe works outside of MP perfectly from a DOS/Window command line.
2. irtuner has a log that shows the commands issued through the irblaster it controls and when i select the channel from within MP, the log never shows any new command issued to the IR blaster.
3. I have re-installed MP 0.1.3 and attempted it again with the same result.
4. I have removed MP 0.1.3 and installed 0.2.0 RC1 and the end result is still the same.

Anyone can help me with this by teaching me how to interpret the MP log?

Alternatively, I would have to tinker with girder (not my preferred choice), failing which I will have to remove MP and installed BTV. That'll be a shame because I really like MP from the little experience I have had with it these past few weeks.

Hi there m8.

Remove the "#" from the External Command delimiter, and replace it with a " " (Space)

At least that worked for me (or for my Nokia 9902 sat reciver :D ), as the program also send out the # to the box i think, and my reciver don´t understand that.....

But remember that if you at some point try a CVS or update to a new version then the "#" is back, and needs to be removed again.....

I tried that but it did not worked. There was no difference in the outcome. I still get a blank screen when I select the channel that should execute MPExTuneCmd and my .exe file.

What I notice is that the # is placed back everytime I re-enter setup of MPExTuneCmd in the plugin. It does not matter if I delete the "#" or place a " " or multiple spaces " " (without the quotes, of course). Unless you are telling me I need the quotes in place? Is this normal behaviour or is my version of MP not behaving like yours, for some reasons?

I have also tried setting up MPExTuneCmd with a command such as shutdown but that didn't work either. It causes me to think that MPExTuneCmd is not working as it should or my setup is not right in some ways, although I can't figure out how.

Hi there......

I really thought i could help you......

I have not mutch to add to this anyway, i have only notished the change from # to a space when i have applyed a CVS update or something like that.....

I don´t remember it to change every time i go into setup....

But i know that it do make a difference with the # or (space), as my hauppauge ir-blaster aperenetly don´t understand eg. a #24 command but it do understand it with a space in front instead..... (space)24 (You know what i mean.... )

And no you don´t need the "" i only put them there in the text to make it more clear what i ment.....

I don´t know how to help you any more with this, sorry.......

I hope that someone else can help more.....

Composite or co-axial

You're right about the co-axial not being the right connection. However, my connection is not incorrect either. My settop box only has a co-axial port (hence my mention of co-axial) but I have a co-axial/composite connector which is then plug into the composite connector on my PVR250.

I also have a RCA video out and another RCA audio out on my settop box. Using this video out, I am able to get video on the channel where I have defined the external channel tab when I switched to this channel for watching TV. However, there is no sound output which is expected since I have only connected the video out to the PVR250. I don't have a corresponding RCA audio in on the PVR250, hence I'm not able to pass audio to the PVR250.

As a result, I am fairly certain the problem is not with the cable connection from my settop box to my PVR card since I can view whatever TV channel my settop box is tuned to within MP. The thing I cannot get working is the changing of channel in MP using the external channel tab and MPExTuneCmd plug-in.

What does CVBS#1 stands for? I assume it is Composite Video ??? ????? but it is just my guess.

Anyway, thanks for trying to help. I still think it is my use or set up of MPExTuneCmd. Any other thoughts?

Help with Interpretation of logs

With further investigations, it appears that:

1. When I set up the external channel tab, the source is not 'correct'. With the use of RCA video in, I now have video when I switched to the channels that have been set up as external.

2. I am starting to think that if MPExTuneCmd is working as design, then it could be a situation where the control of the serial port is not handled properly in my setup. Question - Does MP take control of the serial port?

I am starting to look in this direction as I just cannot find any other clues to this problem I am facing.

Any help with the following errors in the MP log will also be appreciated. The following appears to be the only errors capture in the MP log that may shed further light to the problem but I need help to interpret it.

In error file, I find the following:

------------Start of Log-------------

Not sure if this will help, but have you tried to disable the ExternalDisplay plugin, maybe this is grabbing the port.

Patrick, thanks for the suggestion. Although my external display is not utilizing com port 1 (it is a USB device), I disabled it anyway. The result is still the same.

I am fairly certain the MPExTuneCmd is not working as it should since any exe or bat command I put into the box does not get executed. I have tried various .exe and .bat files and none got executed successfully. However, these will work from a DOS window within Win XP SP2.

I am on the verge of giving up and trying girder (if I ever learn to use it with MP). If only I can get this to work, it will be a very nice HTPC set up for me. :(
