Hi, unfortunately this is not possible, yet.

Suspending + resuming MP is planned for the next release. Suspending "could" help. If not, we should consider closing MP temporarily instead of "just" suspending.

But no date yet and very little time...

Nice to hear, that there is something in the pipeline.
For now i´d enhanced my mediaportal startup wrapper. It is a little python skript and it is checking for a process called mediaportal.exe. If the process is running there is nothing to do. If not, it is starting mediaportal. In earlier Version i had problems with the MP watchdog and this was my quick solution.
This Wrapper skript now checks for a running steam process. If it is started and MP too, the wrapper kills mediaportal and after closing of steam it is starting MP up again. This is working nicely for me. But it is important that steam autostart is disabled

I'm getting a missing or invalid mpsteam.xml message using MP 1.60. I'm guessing the skin files need updating for MP 1.60+. Plugin works fine and still launches steam, pressing the back button when I return to MP gets me out of the error message.

yes, we removed the SkinFile for MPwideSkin. It was ugly and we have a lack on skinning skills
You can try to copy
%programdata%\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal\skin\Titan\MPSteam.xml
to
%programdata%\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal\skin\DefaultWide\MPSteam.xml
that should work.
If not try to extract mpsteam.xml from one of the first releases in first post in this thread (use 7zip) and copy it to
%programdata%\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal\skin\DefaultWide\MPSteam.xml

The current Version only supports titan. try to copy the mpsteam.xml in your streamedmp directory. see MPsteam (Starting "Valve Steam" in Big Picture mode)
