First off, thanks for Media Portal: it's superb. I'm a convert from MythTV... I used to have a dedicated server (back end, in mythtv parlance) for the HTPC running in the loft, making as much noise as it likes and able to stream to anywhere, including the main client which had its own tuner.

I'd like to set up a similar system with Media Portal: Multiple servers, and multiple clients, all able to intermingle.

I understand multiple server support has been turned off in 1.0 to get it released, however can it be put back in for 1.1? I can help test...

Why do you need multiple servers?

I have four tuners in my server and MP handles it perfectly. If my parent's didn't want to keep the antenna point as a backup for their HDTV, I would have removed the splitters in the roof and kept a single antenna point when I installed the same setup for them.

I'd like to have multiple servers as I'd like to use an old PC in the loft for recording duties which is always on. The front end PC is in the lounge and I don't want it always on or in standby.

i guess the sensible thing to do would be to put all tuners in the PC that's always on and leave it at that: there's no reason to have local tuners on the front end...

I think you're probably right: I don't need 'em. I just got used to thinking that way with Myth!

The standard server/client setup works a treat. If you throw a tuner into the client then you will end up with some of your recordings in one place and the rest in another. You will also have two databases to maintain.

My Dell SC440 with a 2.8 P4D and 1g RAM handles the recording without a hitch. The only problem has been when too many clients are timeshifting. This is when the server starts using more than 1g RAM and starts having problems.

If I could be bothered, I'd track down some more memory to throw into it.

Thanks, I think you've helped me make my mind up - I'll chuck all the tuners in a server. My mythtv back end server was/is a P3 1GHz, so I don't think it'll quite cut it for MediaPortal. Although saying that, I am only recording dvb-t, which doesn't need any transcoding... Hmmm! Might have to try and see if it works, even if it's well under spec!

No harm in trying it. The thing that might cause problems is database access times, especially when populating the EPG, for example.

I'm repurposing an Athlon 2400+ for the job . Only problem is the amount of fans in that machine... But it would be good to know if the P3 could support being a TV Server... Hmmm....

I have multiple satellite STB's in separate rooms and have tv-server set up on each, I also have other MP machines in bedrooms without tv cards, I would like to have multiple server support turned back on.
