Re: My new HDD-case for use with Pundit-R

.... I was kind of happy with this solution, which leaves me with a cool Pundit and a cool HDD (in both senses).

I still have to find some cover for the backside of the woofer-case, and to cover up the cables.

Looks like a great idea seperation til HD from the box, since my HD is running 50 degrees C, I suspect this to be related to the heat the pundit is generating ?

Great with the photoes ... like to se any follow ups !

Beautiful HD case!!! :D
Nice work!

ymerguer: Do you use an 18db Papst as CPU fan? You seem to get
a bit more airflow / better temps than me (using the 12db version).

If so, how's that fan noise-wise?

Pingus: Why don't you keep the fan reversed??? You don't have to worry
about HD temps then. Does the CPU hang?

I mounted the Papst CPU fan reversed for the firste couple of weeks after doing your mods. but the CPU got to hot, and yes, it frezes sometimes and sometimes the box just rebooted, after reversing the fan again (sucking air from outside down onto the CPU) this stopped, so I think the extra 10 degrees C made the problem, so thats why ...

Now I'm stuck with a overheated HD instead

Haven't you had any problems about the CPU getting too hot ?

I must say it's still silent ..... !

Hi, I'm going to use the 12dB version (1500 rpm).
I actually haven't mounted it yet, as I want to wait for my PVR500. I have to mod space for that one before I mount the Papst over the CPU.

So the readings I got the other day, are with the original and noisy CPU-fan.

I'll just have to wait and see on this one. Hopefully I'll get good readings with the Papst fan on 1500rpm/12dB, as I have the HDD in the separate case.

Pingus: I haven't had any problems with freezing och rebooting myself...
The Papst 12db is an extremely low airflow fan for 80mm.
Maybe you should try to put a fan with a little bit more airflow in there and have it temperature controlled (by speedfan for example). That way it'll speed up only when necessary and you probably won't notice it anyway then, because of the volume on the TV/movie. Or perhaps put it on 1800-2000 rpm and be happy with that. (?)
I've heard that Panaflo and Adda should make some nice quiet fans.
(I can check some model numbers if you're interested.)

One other thing. The problem with your setup seem to be the HD.
It's probably generating a lot more heat than the 2.5" drive I'm using.
(A 3.5" drive usually generates 4 times as much heat as a 2.5" drive!)

A solution might be to slightly increase the voltage on the PSU fan.
That way the high temps from the HD will be evacuated right away,
without affecting heating the CPU too much.

Do you use the case standing or laying flat?

Looks like you're gonna have a tough time squeezing the 500 in there :)
Looking forward to some pics when you're done! Good luck to you!

Hi Mikael, about the HD I think you are right, the problem that comes to mind is the price for a large 2.5 HD, perhaps the better solution is running MP from a Flash-drive mounted on a kit which make it looks like a HD for the system, that should give me 0 degrees C HD and proberly a cooler case ?.

A 2GB Flash drive should be able to host XP+MP and get the files from another pc ??

My Pundit-R is laying down at the moment, the problems seems a lot smaller when the cover is off, so perhaps I should do the cover mods too ?

A friend of me have made an order for an Heatpipe system in a case with PSU passive cooling, cant remember the name, but I'll see it next month, Ill be back then.

Thanks for the ideas !!

If you havn't cut a large hole instead of the joke to vent holes that's
there from the beginning, do that right away. Big difference!

If 80gb is enough, 2.5" drives aren't that expensive.
(ITButikken Toshiba 4200 rpm - 743.- dkk)
You also get a quieter drive than any 3.5".

Moin,

to give you a first look to "your" Pundit-R with a PVR 500:

(sorry, the camera of my mobile is not the best)

With a pliers, a little bit of extra force, a peace of paper to avoid short-circuits and a construction from tupperware (guarantee that your wife does not notice it) its possible.

Ok, now I finally got my hot PVR500MCE-card in my sweaty palms. Why sweaty? Because it's going to be a tight fit indeed!

So, how did u do this, Scholle? Can u please explain me in detail, as I don't wan't to do it the wrong way around and end up with catastrophic results.
