My Music won't play - and it's not why you think (2 Viewers)

I also have a problem with My Music. When I go to My Music and navigate to a folder that contains mp3 files, it enters it but shows a blank content. Nothin's there, like the folder is empty. My Videos work just fine. Any ideas?

Alright...it's getting weirder.

I updated my music database and no change.

I did NOT have the "gain focus" option checked, so I checked it and rebooted. Still no dice.

I re-read the post before the last and tried the mouse (which I DID try this morning, to no avail) and still nothing. I started clicking around and accidentally clicked on the view type, suddenly I could actually put the mouse pointer over a song, or highlight using the remote...same problem for me in this case. Music played (!!! - Take Ecstasy With Me) all was well.

I thought I'd check another record to see what happened and lo and behold, the same problem. But, if I scroll through the view type until I get to any other than the one I started with (that isn't working), I can select and play music. Keep in mind that it doesn't matter WHICH view type I start with, what matters is that I CHANGE the view type.

I currently have the "allow apps to gain focus" setting checked which I did NOT have before.

Any ideas of how to correct this; to put it back to normal, or the way it was for me a week ago?

And as far as Ubuntu goes, it sounds like you're using Gnome. I've been using KDE (therefore Kubuntu) and using ALSA and never had a problem. I've heard that the gstreamer stuff is a bit wonky. I would also venture to guess that you need choose your sound architecture (ALSA, OSS, ESD) in the main settings (control panel-esque) section.

Also, (to stay completely off topic), I'm not sure about rhythmbox, but if you can run amarok on gnome, you should give it a try. Don't bother, though, if you're not running Dapper as you can only run the latest amarok on Dapper due to dependency issues.

I thought you couldn't run KDE apps on Gnome, but I did it anyway and installed Amarok (I'm using Dapper). Its definitely one of the better media players I've seen in a long, long while - has everything, smart playlists, related albums, wikipedia lookups etc.

Back to your problem - can you try copying a few of your MP3s (or whatever they are) to another location, then tell MP to look in that location (rescan the DB too).

I will try copying some of my files, but it'll have to wait as rescanning my database takes somewhere in the neighborhood of three hours. I'll have to do it in the morning, before I leave for work (as I did today) and report back tomorrow night. If I do it now, I won't be able to watch any telly! (Can't have that...not after the day I've had!!)

PS: you CAN install (at least some) KDE apps if you're running Gnome and vice versa, as long as you load the appropriate libraries. The great thing is that apt takes care of all of that for you. Oh how I wish we could get MP ported to Linux or at least running ala Google apps.

3 hours!?! Geez, that's must be an awful lot of music...

Now why can't myth-tv be on synaptic... or is it? I haven't really looked, but that should be a pretty good alternative, provided you can set it up of course.
