Just to make sure - is the different cable you tried able to run at Gbit speed when you connect the same switch port to another PC?

I have a Realtek 1 Gb network interface connected to a cheap $30 Trendnet 8-port 1 Gb switch. This links up at full 1 Gb link speeds using short 2m, 6 ft generic cables and I've never had problems. Assuming you've found the Realtek 1 GBE controller properties configuration page (on win 7: Control Panel > System Security > Device Manager > Network Adapters) in Advanced Settings I'd double check the following settings.

    Auto Disable Gigabit, verify disable
    Energy Efficient Ethernet, try disable
    Green Ethernet, try disable
Speed & Duplex, try forcing 1 Gbps Full Duplex

@jonm I'm using a short 1m cable into a port on the Cisco router that previously had a client running on it at 1Gb. Unfortunately, I can't test the cable as all the clients are on different floors of the house and thus it is too short.

@RonD - Thanks for the settings suggestions, I'll double check what mine are.

EDIT - Checked settings and they are as RonD suggested - still at 100Mbps.

The new LAN card should arrive tomorrow, so I'll give it a try then. I'll report back my finding and success (or not!)

PorkyT, this might not help at all but I know Marvell had/has a piece of software that I use to check/test the state of links. It would report the state for each pair etc. etc. etc. Realtek's driver page for your adaptor links to a "Windows Diagnostic Tool":
    http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...d=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

Might give some helpful info while you wait for the other adaptor to arrive.

    The other thing is...
Whose driver are you using: ASUS's or Realtek's? That could make a difference.
I'd also check out BIOS/UEFI and see if there are any related settings.

    Ohhh, another thing...
Intel boards can sometimes be starved of PCIe lanes for connecting the various controllers. The way the BIOS/UEFI is configured and which cards are plugged into which slots determines how the available lanes/bandwidth is shared. As far as I know AMD are more generous with PCIe lanes in their chipsets... but maybe something like that could be involved. Just a random thought... :)
