Hi,

So, nVidia has recently announced a great new chipset with on-board DX9 graphics, MPEG2 decoding, DVI out and a whole bunch of other goodies.

Is this the ultimate motherboard for a Media Portal-based HTPC?

More info on the new chipset here.

Just put this in another topic, and in my opinion the answer is yes. been following these boards closely through development, and in my opinion the best one is this from ASUS:

I've been checking these boards out, especially the Asus one posted earlier by Fathead. I may go with this MSI board:
The K8NGM2-FID2.
It's basically the same as the ASUS, but has slightly better audio output.

Check out this link on another forum I found, it had some great comparison info between the ASUS, Gigabyte and MSI boards that all have the same basic specs:

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=29&threadid=1762814

A great review on the ASUS Board:

I have been thinking of purchasing this board, but the one weird part of the board as their conclusion stated is:

About the only thing to complain about is the lack of the TV/Component output connector. Officially it is sold separately, however trying to find that little module is difficult. That essentially rules the Asus A8N-VM CSM out of being used as the basis for a HTPC system. We would strongly encourage Asus to include the tiny TV Output bracket.
(Bit dodgy they sell the damn connector seperately!)

NO, 6150 is not good for HTPC....at least m2npv-vm is terrible choppy for sport....for usual video it is sufficient

I use the Asus board (M2NPV-VM). after some tweaking and the proper setup it is a fine board for HTPC usage. i don't really watch much TV on it, but lots of video, DVD, and music, etc. it has decent connectivity. i use the VGA out (it also has DVI out) and an optical SPDIF connector can be a bought for cheap (the board already has the pinout). even with just a Sempron slightly overclocked, i can play HD stuff fine. any 720p material, and some 1080p. Purevideo seems to work with the 6150 also.
honestly considering it's so cheap, i think it's great for HTPC usage. not a lot of overclocking options, but that doesn't matter unless you also plan to play games.

and my board came with the component output module.

I have a Asus Pundit P1 AH2 (with the Geforce 6150) from which I have tried to built a HTPC.

I have had a miserable time getting the DVI out to work. Basically, if you use the Nvidia drivers, with my TFT screen the driver wont recognize the TFT and wont put out a signal. So for DVI output, am stuck with the stock VGA driver (i tried at least 4 different NVIDIA drivers from old to new), which excludes all of the hardware video acceleration.

Others have experienced the same problem, and there doesnt seem to be a real solution to the problem so far:

http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t17288.html
The issue seems to be with the driver, as the boot screen appears fine in DVI, and I even had the same issue when running Linux (with the NVIDIA driver again). So no MythTV for me either!

I wonder if anyone else had similar struggles, I would welcome any help.

i've only ever tried the VGA output. when i get the chance i will try DVI, but i wonder if the type of display specifically is the issue? the only TV i have access to right now to test DVI is a Samsung DLP.
