To wake the computer from cold power off, you need an IR receiver that is piggy back wired into the cases power control switch.

Or, if your motherboard supports it, also from usb? My ASRock supports wake from s5 over usb/cir.

does that also control cursor movement like a mouse like the vrc-1100 does?
I would like to keep that capability but its secondary to the buttons actually working LOL

I'm using the VRC-1100 remote and quite like it, but it does need to be used with EventGhost to get the most from it. You will also need the EventGhostPlus plugin for MP. There is a starter guide here that I used to get going:

The only downside to this mouse (barring the config) is that some of the buttons are duplicates (Play/pause, info/rightclick, ok/enter), but for ten quid on amazon if it gets broken it's not too expensive to replace.

Using this guide will disable the mouse pad, but only because the commands are not mapped in the default plugin files included with EventGhost (look in the plugin folder for the Auvisio Remote, the file __init__.py contains the mappings for the mouse buttons and can be edited. The remote has 12 directions on this pad that can be mapped.

Tips:
I set the mouse actions to only work when window:mediaportal.exe is not present, which prevents mouse actions when using MP (if that is what you want), also freeing up buttons used in MP to be reassigned outside of MP
Creative use of EventGhost will allow you to extend the remote to function differently in different programs

Things that I haven't got working yet:
Mouse will only go so far, doesn't fully repeat as it does when on it's native driver
Mapping new window IDs (I found these IDs in the Titan Basic Home Editor) to allow me to create buttons for favoured plugins (have only got Online Videos working so far)
I also fancy setting up EventGhost's HTTP server so that I can create a web page to act as a remote so that we can point our smartphones at it...
