Many of the recodings are played back with no audio on MP and on Windows Media Player. I know the audio is there, because I can play them with audio in another applcation, like VLC.
I am using mpg file format.

I attached the logs of 2 recordings of the same program on the same channel. One has audio and the other one does not.
I think the files themselves may be more important than the logs in this case, but I could not attach them here though they are only 0.5MB. I get this message when trying to attach them the the forum: "no_audio.mpg: Invalid File".

MS mpeg2 demuxer is not able to decode all audio types. As a sollution you should try to use .ts recording format as then TsReader will handle the demuxing of the video & audio streams.

    Thanks tourettes.
Yet using mpg instead of ts has its advantages. Anyway, I am sure you are not saying that mpg format in tv server is not and cannot function properly and should not be used.
However, as I mentioned the files can be played correctly on other players (but also not on Windows Media Player), and the problem is not consistent. So it sounds like a bug to me. 1 bug and 1 missing feature to be precise -
    - Bug (in TV server?): Something is wrong with the audio on many of the recodrings.
    - Missing feature in MediaPortal - Ability to play such files.

Does MP use the TV card mpeg compression? If it does, could the bug be in the card or in its driver?

A bug / missing feature in Microsoft MPEG2 demultiplexer, so nothing we can do about it. VLC uses it's own internal multiplexer so it works.

Do you know what codecs it may be trying to use, wonder if sound mono not stereo, because a lot of codecs do not handle mono well.

If FFDShow installed change to latest version and under the codecs tab select MP1\MP2 and change to libavcodec.
AC3 codec, go to systems tab and enable mpeg support.

If you create a link to the TV recordings folder within Video config, do these files then play from video's section in MP.

If that does not work, upload a small sample 2-3mbs as a rar file, so i can see if it will play here.

But ts is recommended as format for recording, because of the reason tourette stated.

I followed the link to install the latest ffdshow, made the setting you mentioned, and changed the MediPortal setting to use ffdshow instead of MPA.
    And it works!
    Thanks.

That may be well and good for him; but I'm using AC3Filter in passthrough mode for my audio. I get good .mpg files and occasionally I get one with no audio. I try it in WMP, VLC Player, ZoomPlayer - it's just not there. I tested last night and hear sound during LiveTV, then recorded a minute and stopped... no audio on the .mpg file! The TSWriter log had a good bit of detail -- could you tell from it the difference? The log is quite long, it has details from weeks back. Could you tell why some files do and others don't from it?
