to test your router , I would seggest start watching a recording on the server and connect to that stream via vlc from the client (stop mediaportal all together). The network connection string to use will be in the MEdiaPortal log in the way of rtsp://serverip/xyzabc. VLC uses no codecs to display video so it will assist in proving the router.

Wow Charli, you are going a bit too fast for me. I don't have enough knowledge of logs to know what to use
So I install VLC on the client, but where do I start this stream then? How can I instruct VLC to open the stream?
The router has absolutely no effect inside your LAN. There it is just a switch. :)

The VLC suggestion is still a good one to test the LiveTV (RTSP) Streams created by the TV-Server, on your local client PC.

And i recommend that you upgrade to RC4 as soon as possible. ;)

Yes, I will try the VLC option tonight.
A stupid question maybe, but can i upgrade to RC4 'over' the old RC3 install? I mean without having to setup everything again? If it keeps the settings, I can try that as well. If I have to start setting it up from scratch I will try that at a later point.

Becareful with that, backups are required if you want to restore your old settings. It is recommended to reconfigure from scratch when upgrading as new features and fix fixes are done between releases which may mean revised settings. There are guides in the forum on how to resotre config and even a plugin - although never tried it.

When you uninstall MediaPortal / TV-Server you will be asked if you want to do a "clean uninstall".
If you choose that, then EVERYTHING IS GONE FOREVER. ;)

If you do not choose that, then the database(s) and all settings + community skins/plugins will stay on your HDD.
But when you install MediaPortal 1.0 RC4, the installer will rename the old folder(s) of RC3 to i.e. MediaPortal_backup_2008-12-03, and install RC4 into a clean MediaPortal folder.

So all your old settings/plugins/skins/tv-logos are still on your HDD, but in the backup folder(s).
You can savely copy some of these back to your new installation folder.
But be aware if you copy back community skins/plugins, MediaPortal.xml, databases folder this could cause issues with your new installation.

A guide can be found in the wiki.

Okay, thanks guys. I will not upgrade to RC4 right away then. I'm not such a computer expert and was already very happy when I had RC3 going. The thought of going through that again is still a bit intimidating

I have another question though. I came across this thread and thought it might have some bearing on my case. Can you confirm if this may be related?

in my opinion, thats a "ugly" hack which should not be used at all. ;)

    :sorry:

I really hope I can get it to work in a normal way soon. I am already fooling around with this for weeks and don't understand why I can't get it to work. The logs look ok says charli, I can play the files through a share...
I will try the VLC part tonight. Hopefully that will show something. I'm not looking forward to starting all over with a new install (RC4). I have already spent quite a bit of time getting RC3 to work (I'm quite a muppet at this stuff...)

Don't get me wrong, I love MP and the way it keeps developing :D

Btw, can I do only a tvserver upgrade to RC4 or does the client always need to have the same version to work? Also, why should I go to RC4? Does it have big improvements in the area I'm having problems with? Or is it better in a more general sense?

I just upgraded to RC4 today. the upgrade I did was pretty seemless and did as Infinityloop said with selecting No to delete everything. This did infact save my TVServer Database so no reconfig there and then copied the Plugins, skins and MediaPortal.xml and MediaPortalDirs.xml across and all was working fine. In saying this my setup will be different to yours and I have been playing for a while now......

It is highly recommended that all components be on the same level, especially when trying to find an issue in your system. In saying that, if you find a release that is bug free for you then it comes back to, "don't fix what is not broken". In your current case though, it looks like you will have to bite the bullet and upgrade.

If you find VLC is working then the next step would be upgrade to RC4 so you will get more support from the developers. I did have some issues with playing recorded programs with RC3 intermittantly but restarting MP resolved the issue. It was also happening with SD channels though so my issues were not exactly the same.

You don't sound to optimistic about this getting solved on RC3 either. Even if VLC is working, i still have to upgrade to RC4? This doesn't sound good at all. I more and more get the feeling that it's inevitable that I have to install RC4 to have any chance of getting it to work....:(
Very frustrating, I was so close to the finish...this was the only part of MP that wasn't working for me. The rest was going so well........

If VLC works, then this means that the TV-Server is working correctly and that your firewall(s) are configured correctly as well.
With RC4, we would not need this step, because if there is a connection issue, MP would tell you. ;)

After that we can take a closer look at your MP client installation and why it does not work there.
