One thing that I miss by not using a standalone dvd player is that I don't have a simple display telling me how much time is elapsed and/or remaining on the video I'm watching. Is there some way to make this happen? I think I'd like something small and discreet in a corner, but I'd like it to stay visible all the time.

Actually, my remote hasn't arrived yet. I'm hoping to get it today or tomorrow. I'm using mouse/keyboard for control till then.

However, I believe that the 'Y' key does the same thing as the remote's info button. When I do that, I get a progress bar at the top that spans the entire width of the screen, along with another window that covers the bottom-left quadrant. This is absolutely NOT what I'm looking for.

Here's the scenario: My wife and I are watching a show. After a while, I've got to pee. If there are only five minutes left till the end, I can wait. If there's 20 minutes left, I might like to pause the show and take a bathroom break.

If I can avoid it, I'd like to not interrupt my wife's enjoyment of the show by bringing up a big bright status display that obscures the picture. I'd rather have a small, unobtrusive time display someplace.

Oh, yes. The "Y" key does the same thing as the "info" remote button.

Uhm, I'm not aware of a function like this in MP. Maybe a plugin, or a skin that handles the topbar and infobox in a different way... Sorry, I cannot help anymore :(

I'd rather know that something probably doesn't exist rather than spend forever looking for it, so... thanks.

Well, my case is a plain old tower case behind the entertainment center where it can't be seen. I did a little looking at external displays, but they all seem ludicrously expensive.

you could always modify the skin for full screen video OSD. Remove the stuff you don't want, then shrink down the progress bar and maybe move it to the very bottom. Then adjust the OSD timeout to be more than usual, say an hour or two.

Will do what you want, but kind of messy.

I doubt there will ever be a perfect solution since it sounds like something that isn't too popular. Most people would prefer an un-interrupted screen and would opt for a VFD instead.
Also, VFD's can be had quite cheaply if you can find your way around a circuit board and soldering iron.
