I have been reading a very long thread on the avs forum about overriding EDID codes for vista and wondered if others have faced this issue. I apologise that this is not specifically a MediaPortal issue but MP users like me probably strike this more than most.
HTPC running MediaPortal with hdmi out to sony HD tv. Sony TV toslink out to older sony 5.1 receiver. The audio to the receiver is only stereo not because of the TV downmixing but because vista detects that my tv only supports stereo (from the TV's edid code) and downmixes the audio before sending it over hdmi to the TV (hdmi properties only show stereo as an option) desite the fact that the TV can pass full audio through its toslink if it gets it "allegedly".
It appears that vista allows an edid override (as tourettes linked to above) via an inf driver allowing vista to enable full audio over hdmi to tvs even though they only support stereo. The TV only plays the front channels with its 2 speakers but its spdif or toslink out then passes this full audio to an attached receiver and this gets the 5.1/6/1 audio via the tv. This has advantages for those without hdmi switchable amps or those not wanting their amp on all the time. They get tv sound and on demand full 5.1 when the receiver is fired up.
This fix also allegedly stops vista from disabling 5.1 out when some types of hdmi switching receivers pass on edid info to vista from tvs that attached to it.
If anyone else has played with this and had some success I'd love a response before I go the hard yards and try bashing a custom inf file togther with modded edid data.
Greetings Fellow MP'rs.
Does anyone out there use tvguide.com to access TV listings..? If so, can you advise on how it is set up for use with MediaPortal..? I havebeen using Zap2XML / GraceNote but that just died (for me alone seemingly) and I am out of listings. :( Would appreciate any help - Thanks.
