What I do get is what I'd call tear - the whole picture looks nice most of the time, but for maybe half a second, a horizontal split appears about 1/3 down from the top, with the part above and the part below appearing to be shifted horizontally with respect to each other, by so many pixels that it looks awful. Can't find a reference picture but I think its this Screen tearing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I guess this is what you're experiencing:

I get tearing if I turn hardware acceleration off. I was experimenting with turning it off when I had picture hanging problems and somebody said the acceleration may be causing it. But I had terrible tearing so turned it back on.

Is yours on or off? I can't remember exactly where the setting is (I'm at work), but I think it's probably under "Video Rendering Settings" or something similar in the config (needs to be in advanced mode to see that setting I think).

I've played with that (h/w acc). its under the mediaportal config->directshow filter settings for the codec you're using. I've got h/w accell on at the moment, but it wasn't any better (maybe worse, not sure) with it off. I wouldn't say the tearing was "terrible" but its definately still there, on any kind of fast panning shot its enough to make you want to look away for a few seconds.

For Vista, make sure that you have turned AERO (That glass looking UI) on and are using EVR.

    thank you.

I have EVR selected in MP directshow filter config. always have and its the default I believe?

well f** me aero isn't on . I thought it was. probably off because I didn't bother to run the "rate windows experience" thingummy.

    I also found this:
TweakGuides.com - ATI Catalyst Tweak Guide
the "significant additional option" they discuss was the thing I had missed (I had searched high and low for this vsync think in my gfx configuration!) so I have now also set
"Always On - Vertical Sync will always remain on, regardless of the setting in the game or 3D application. This is not recommended, as it may reduce performance however it guarantees that there will never be any screen"tearing". "

probably shouldn't do this as I am changing two things at once (I test/design/develop/debug networks for a living - if you are unsure whats wrong - change 1 thing at once) but heck, I will run MP for a bit with this new config and report back.

    cheers

I used to have the same problem with 'tearing' as you did under Vista. I have since re-installed on a XP machine and have had trouble free viewing, apart from the interlace issue which is now fixed, which I did by not using the MPV decoder for video.

Maybe it is an issue with the Aero interface that causes the tearing as has been mentioned?

Also, I changed the default refresh rate under directx from default (from graphics card settings) to 50Hz....you can set this under the command 'dxdiag' when you enter the cmd console
