Synopsis::

Can't play VOBs or MPEGS remuxed from VOBs via VideoRedo

Hi,
All my other DVD player progs, (WINDVD7, Cyberlink) can play VOB files without the IFO, but MP won't.

They also play fine (including turning subtitles on and off) on my Pinnacle Showcenter.

Why won't MP play a VOB? All I get is a black screen.

I also tried remuxing the VOB to MPEG via VideoRecode, but MP just sits there and doesn't even attempt to play the resulting file. The file works fine in Windows Media Player.

Log info below.

Any help greatly appreciated :)

Cheers

Gary

Playing the VOB seems to cause this error:

19/02/2006 21:47:09 DVDPlayer:Unable to get dvdvolumeinfo 0x80040291
19/02/2006 21:47:09 DVDPlayer:GetCurrentSubpicture() failed

And here's the log info from trying to play the VideoRecode version of the file:

After some limited digging around the net, the MPEG playing problem seems to be related to this:

19/02/2006 21:51:02 vmr9: pin:0 not connected:80040209
19/02/2006 21:51:02 vmr9: no input pin 1 found
19/02/2006 21:51:02 vmr9: no input pin 2 found

There is talk of adding the Overlay filter into the graph, but I'm at a loss as to how to do this.

Still no clue on how to get a VOB to play though.

Well it looks like I'm the only person who cares about doing this...

Anyway, strange behaviour continues:

Playing a VOB on the HD causes a real DVD in the drive to play instead.

After a complete rebuild of my machine .VOBs renamed as .MPG work fine, but subtitles don't work.

I care... :D

No, seriously, its 2:30am, and i've just downloaded and installed MP.. and wooow, it looks seriously cool. But I have just run into the same problem as you, in that playing VOBs just displays a black screen..

I'll read up on some more threads tomorrow I think.. i guess it must be doable! :)

    Example: If you rename all your .VOB files to .mpg (you will have to enable show file extensions in folder option and once extensions changed recommend hide again, cause you can make files unusable if you do not), and rename them to the films name, ie lethal weapon CD1, lethal weapon CD2 etc and drop them into a Folder called Lethal Weapon, they will play as a continuous film.
    VOB files are mpg files renamed to be used be used on dvd player thats all they are.

    VOBs contain more than just the mpg, they can also contain subtitles, multiple audio tracks, etc.
    If I take a VOB and rename it as .mpg, then that will play fine, but if the file contains subtitles they cannot be displayed as the file is just treated as a straight MPEG (which doesn't contain subtitles).

    As I said in my original post, my Showcenter, WinDVD, Cyberlink, etc quite merrily play a VOB without the .IFO or having a DVD folder structure. I just want to know why MP can't (and can someone please make it do it :) )

    It's nice to have a movie with just a single VOB and no horrible wrapping folders or extra files! I really don't won't to waste hard drive space ripping an entire DVD with all the useless extras, audio tracks and foreign subtitles.

    Hi Offcolour
    If your concerned about Hard disk space and you do not want unneccessary extra's, suggest you use a dvd to avi converter like winavi or magic dvd ripper.
    4 films for the space of 1 :lol:

    Hi, I'm not worried about space (got about 1.4 TB over two machine) I just don't want to make it messy with DVD structures and waste space with rubbish like director's commentaies and extras that I will NEVER watch :D
