QAM Detection/Tuning Headaches (1 Viewer)

Hello All,

I will post my configuration data if there is something within it that should be analyzed. However I am suspecting that there is not anything wrong with MediaPortal and/or there may not be anything wrong with the hardware I have. I suspect (I hope I am wrong) that there is something wrong with my cable provider.

Over the last 6 months I have periodically purchased and tried various NTSC/ATSC/QAM cards attempting to detect and tune at least ONE digital channel via QAM. To date I have not once detected a QAM channel using all the QAM scans in MediaPortal and also using other TV Tuner software which claims to support QAM. I can detect all my analog channels always in MP and other software and view all analog channels just fine. I have NEVER been able to pickup even 1 QAM channel, encrypted or unencrypted (clear).

In my living room I have a standard cable box (Scientific Atlanta Explorer 3100) provided by my cable provider (Charter, San Luis Obispo, California) and I receive channels ranging from 2 - 500 which I know that 2 - 70 (or 80) are my basic analog channels and I can only assume that the others above 80 and to 500 (about 100 more channels) are all digital QAM64 or 256.

Even if I could scan and find encrypted channels I would be happy! (well, sort of happy). At least then I would know that they are there and I could search for clear channels...but I can't even locate encrypted QAM channels.

So I am just asking for some tips or advice that will help me perform a scan and be able to actually find ANY digital channel. I have used all of the TV Server QAM scan modes: QAM Standard, Alternative, IRC, HRC, HRC+3 and find 0 channels. I have used an ATI TV Wonder HD 650 PCI Tuner, ASUS My Cinema PHC3-100/NAQ/FM/AV/RC, both of which support NTSC, ATSC and QAM. And today I just received my Hauppauge HVR-2250 Dual NTSC/ATSC/QAM tuner and still no success.

If my exact configuration is needed to provide any tips or advise I will gladly post it. I will begin filling out system info right now anyway so I have it all collected but my hope is that someone might at least be able to slap me in the head and tell me "hey dummy, you need to do this ....".

How did ASUS My Cinema PHC3-100/NAQ/FM/AV/RC vs Hauppauge compare? I'm debating between Hauppauge 1600 and Asus.

Did you ever get the Asus Mycinema to work? I bought two of these and the included software works just fine. Installing MediaPortal right now. Gb pvr and Sesame TV both do not work with the qam channels as of the date I write this. But this software is open source so even if it doesn't work, maybe we can get it to.

Hello All.
I am having the exact same problem with my cable provider, Longview / Kilgore as David is having with his. My system does not find digital channels. I have cable plugged into both the connectors. My Sony TV finds digital channels. I have just now completly reinstalled YOA and received the same results.
Can anyone help or point us in the correct direction? Please -- It's not a David problem!

Hi David

I've seen your logs from the ATSC/QAM scanning thread. Your tv.log.failed to find any channel is a bit confusing. Plenty of channels seem to be found, and they're definitely digital. Clean short logs with a concise explanation of what you're doing, what the outcome is, and what you expected would be helpful...
