Yes, because most video is then using hardware acceleration, which makes those nice new graphics chips on your motherboard do the work they where intended for :)

is Aero still needed? My HTPC is Vista Business, since I had that install disk handy. I don't think Business versions have aero.

    Cheers,
    Marcus.

Aero quarantines tear free video playback with EVR (in other applications than MP also). With good luck you might experience less or almost no tearing with Aero off, but its just based on luck, drivers and other timing factors.

So Aero is highly recommended to have on (I guess we should add a note on the config application about that).

Switched to EVR also, almoste everything seems to work great; but now I cannot play DVD's normally anymore. The interface of MP when pressing forward or I(nformation) is shown behind the playing DVD video... only the timenumbers of the progressbar are on top of the video playing.

In the DVD settings there is a option to enable / disable "turn off DXVA". (probably uncheck it)
Try to alter this and see if its working now.

Tried that but it didn't fix it. Seems that the navigation is working alright, but I cannot see the interface of MP because it seems to be behind the playing video. Found that out when playing a 4:3 DVD on my 16:9 TV... the interface was behind the video and showing at the left and right black borders next to the video.

When switching back to the main menu and stopping the DVD, the small player in th eleft bottom turns black and stays on top of everything, even when playing some AVI files...

    ---------------

Turning AERO on seemed to have solved the problem!

    How to switch to EVR

Hi, I have the same problems with WRM9 and would like to try EVR - but I cant fint the setting in MP Configuration where I can select EVR. Could someone please explain where I can find this setting.

edit: I found the expert mode and thereby the EVR setting - didnt read the Wiki close enough the first time :)

    Thanks

    Confusing this.
I had been using VMR9 as I didn't like the GUI flickering and tearing with EVR enabled. However on checking my display properties, I noticed that Aero wasn't there because at some point (presumably when I built the machine!) i'd disabled the DWM Service. Enabled that (and Aero) and yay, no tearing. But even better, the GUI Flicker seems to have vanished too! OK, i've not used it a lot yet, but previously, all I had to do was watch tv, hit Guide and the flicker appeared.

    Will continue investigating...
