I am trying to switch to tv server as my central tv recording sollution.
But now pushing it to production and forcing my wife to use it she complains (and I can now confirm) stuttering playback once in a while.
It looks like that once every 10 minutes suddenly the screen freezes for a half second but sound plays on. The picture then speeds up to reach the sound again. This takes about a second in total.

This is a dedicated tv client htpc in the living room, so there are not really any programs running (except some supporting to enhance the htpc).

The tv server is on a non dedicated pc, but it is not used during this tests. And that is used for gaming and is way overpowered to be suspected.

Any ideas? If this does not work stable my wife wont start using this sollution and that will disrupt my plans to buy pc's with MP on it for every room in the house :D as the sole tv watching sollution.

Just a few ideas to get going.

You said that your TVServer is not used during this test. Did you then copy the recorded file to the living room PC for this test? Or are you playing over network from TVServer PC? If so, Network specs? Copy file to local living room hdd and try again. Result?

Also worth while to check your codecs with filmerit and fix problems.

Then report back your curent codec settings.

Oh, by the way, devs always recommend that TVServer and MP Clients MUST be same version.

hehe, yeah i did say the tv server was not used ;). But I mean that there are no other applications running on the tv server during playback. But I did stream from the tv server.
The lan is cabled 100mbit with 2 hubs. 1 hub is in the router in the living room. So the htpc is connected to the router that is connected to the hub and the tv server is conencted to that hub also. All 100mb and no real other traffice going on there.

Ill give that filmerit program a go now. And report back.
Thanks for the help so far.

And the client and server are both from the same 1.0 final installer.

How do I play the ts file directly from the hdd off the living room pc? using the videos plugin? Cause I wont be able using the tv client pluging right? So that will only test if the file playing can be done smoothly I guess? But that usefull info also, ok i get it ;)

Ok, here is some more testing:
Playing the recording from another machine, same stutters on the same places
Playing the recording from hdd directly in my video, same stutters on the same places
Playing the recording from hdd using power dvd, same stutters on the same places
Playing the recording from a MP installation on the tv server, same stutters on the places

The diagnostic tool gave on the other machine, with the same stutters the follwing diagnostics, see attached image.

But since this problem shows on all machines I think we have to look at the tv server in question.

I made a second recording on a PVR of the same show, ill check to make sure it was not in the broadcast.

It was an overlapping recording. But the overlap was only 30 minutes and the stutters I know are at 38 minutes into the recording.
The tswriter.log does not mention any problem just a start at the proper time and a stop when it was done. And the stop of the earlyer recording after 30 minutes after start.
No errors in the error log.

And i tried another codec (ffdshow) with the same stutter. So i think its allready in the recording.

I watched the recording on the PVR, and gues what, its there too, except the PVR handles the glitch slightly better. You hardly notic it. So my guess is that the stream is corrupted slightly at that moment and the ts writer or the codecs we use shows the corrupted part as a freeze and the PVR as a blurry moment. But that is hardly noticable that way.

So not really a MP problem I guess. But still one I really want to get rid off.

So looking for a codec that handles the glitch better or a way to fix the strams of those glitches.

    Its a DVB-T stream btw.

TSReader did show several continuity errors (8) and 3 where several minutes before the stutters I experience.
But nothing really on the moment I have the stutters.
I tried several other codecs and they all show the same thing.

Any more ideas of what to check?
