Hi, I've recently bought an Onkyo HT-6300 7.1 Surround sound system. I have everything on my HTPC setup to send PCM to the Receiver to get Multichannel audio. I played Music, Movies and even Live TV and it sounds good. I decided to try a previously recorded TV show and noticed that it was only in Stereo (2 Channels), Now this could be due to the station broadcasting the show, and I haven't had the chance to try it yet, but is it possible for MP to record Multichannel (5.1+) audio? Or is it all depending on the Tuner card (Hauppauge 1950)?

    Hi Rob

It depends on what you're recording. Digital signals are recorded as-is with any audio tracks included by the channel provider. Analog only records to stereo with cards that have software encoders. If an analog card had 5.1 channel hardware encoding then I'm honestly not sure what would happen - I don't know of any such card. Your Hauppauge 1950 would encode the analog L+R RCA inputs using its hardware encoder, and that would get recorded as stereo.
