Is it possible to use the API from Discogs.com for such an application?
You need to write a client, and everything will work. FreeDB and GnuDB use the same API syntax because GnuDB is a fork of FreeDB; if the API were different, you'd have to write a new client.

The official-email requirement sounds like an identity check so they can match the request to an account, rather than anything to do with the rip itself. Worth asking support whether they can confirm that before you send anything. If the request is already written up, the PM route seems simpler than typing it twice.

The request was sent and—judging by the positive response—processed, and the MP was added as one of the attachments.
