Only thing i'm missing is that black should be black and not grey? If somebody have an idea to make this possible, please say so.

I play a movie that is cinematic widescreen and pause it at the very start where everything is still black (grey), then i just turn down the brightness until i can't distinguish the grey from the black bars above and below the movie. I assume this happens because my video card is outputing 0-255 however the video is rendered as 16- 235. I have noticed that all my video files are the similar shade of grey prior to adjusting the contrast level. If you find that some videos have different shades of black ie 0 vs 16 then you will need more complicated adjustments.

This is not the most elegant solution, but is a good extremely quick fix and should be good enough for most users. You can also down display calibration videos to adjust the white balance and other colour settings, but that is complicated and i really think the above fix is good enough (as long as all your videos are rendered as 16-235, if you have some rendered as 0-255 and some rendered as 16-235 then you have a problem. there is a reg hack for ati video cards that apparently corrects this).

Yeah you right. Mush be a problem in MP EVR render, because there's nothing wrong when playing it in MPCH. Can't live with changed the brightness myself. Hmm.
Where did you find the ati reg hack? That sounds promissing.

    i use VMR9 with XP SP3

Do a bit of reading on it. I think if you are using Catalyst 9.2 or higher, then the reghack doesn't work for vista.
If you only use MP to watch video and all video from MP are 16-235, just do my simple brightness fix.

Ideally HTPC should just be 0-255 and everything should be rendered as 0-255 OR HTPC should be 16-235 and everything rendered as 16-235, however this is not always the case.

Yeah ideally it should be like that. Well i could try and request that for next version of MP. Will try and read what you provided. Thanks.

Btw. which specific reg is making this possible?

Be prepared to do a lot of reading it's all there if you click on some of the links that come of the avsforum post above. I would recommend you do the following test first

    Run Catalyst with default settings
Adjust the TV brightness up really high.
Run an HD movie and SD movie, see if the black of the movie is the black of the bars.
If the black of the movie is the same as black bars in all content then everything is already setup.

If the black of the movie is a different colour to the black bar then your PC is sending 0-255 but your renderer is rendering 16-235. Adjust the brightness of TV down until black of movie = black of the bar. Then load an SD movie, hopefully the black of the movie is the same as the black of the bar. Now adjust the brightness back up one or two notches - you should now notice a subtle difference between the black movie and black bars, adjust it back down so they are the same. Your black level is now sweet as =) ... with this setting you actually miss out on 0-16, but that doesn't matter as the video is never rendered below 16 so there is no point being able to view below 16.

    HI brudertac,

Have you tried the "dynamic refreshrate' function which comes with MP 1.02? You can find it in Configuration.exe > Expert mode > General > Dynamic Refreshrate.

If the audio is perfect, but the video isnt, this could be because of the mismatch in source file and actual refreshrate of the tv/monitor.

    For more information see:

    Hi edterbak,

yes i have tried this. But with the refreshrate changer i have "totaly out of sync" sound AND stutter on DTS Sound

    But thats another Bug...

please....clean up the first post a bit.
Just make it more readable and clearer for the average user...at the moment it's just not clear what you have to do to make it work.

Such a long first post with no clear structure or nicely arranged subjects does even scare average users off and don't even want to try it.
The first post should be a simple, structured and clear explanation what to do.

As I read it AC3filter is the only incompatible audio codec.
It says also in the opening post that PowerDVD is blacklisted, but later on it says it's usefull to use parts of powerdvd...could someone explain this?

Also, it says if I want to use DXVA, I have to use Catalyst, but that's only for ATI, does this mean that without an ATI card you can't get DXVA with SAF?

So if I understand the first post correctly, the advice is:
SAF + powerdvd mpeg2 codec at Movies/DVD section
SAF + Elecard Mpeg2 decoder at tv section

In the first post it says you need to set the MPA codec configuration. What about when you use the powerdvd codec instead, don't I need to set up the powerdvd codec in MP config?

It also says: -HD video + subtitles: will not use DXVA (should be possible in MP 1.0.2)
Now that 1.0.2 is out, is it possible now to use DXVA with subtitles??

What videocodec do you use for x264 and vc-1 material? And how is the videoquality compared to other codecs for these formats? Can't we use a different codec for x264 or vc-1, if that one should give better picture quality, just like the powerdvd mpeg2 codec?

The first post says: The best experience for Live TV (not H.246) i got by using Elecard Mpeg2 decoder.
But no explanation is given on how to actually use the Elecard Mpeg2 decoder. How do I install and use it together with SAF?
