Re: SAF v5.00 experimental (based on FFDShow DXVA decoder)

Hi Hoborg,
Just a question for my own understanding.
For the video section you used to recommend PDVD10 for both MPEG and H264 decoding. This has now been changed to ffdshow. What makes you prefer ffdshow over PDVD at the moment? And what are the pro's ad cons of PDVD10 compared to ffdshow? Is there anything I should be aware of when using PDVD10 for mpeg and h264 videos?

kkendall:
My mistake. FFDShow doesnot work with MePofor MPEG-2 live TV very good - a/v sync issue. Use PDVD decoder.

I'm not sure what mistake you're talking about. :sorry: And I'm not asking for the tv part, but for the video part... So I would still like to ask you what makes you prefer ffdshow over PDVD in the video section? And what are the pro's ad cons of PDVD10 compared to ffdshow? Is there anything I should be aware of when using PDVD10 for mpeg and h264 videos?

MPEG-2 is used for DVDs. FFDshow MPEG-2 decoder used by SAF heve this tweks enabled:
+output to NV12 colorspaces - this will enable HW deinterlacing if your GPU support it
+crop - this will remove black border around picture. Nearly ALL TVs have overscan, so this is doing automatically if you play DVD in DVD player but not in PC
+brightness correction - to make black = black, not gray - a lot of users have this issue, typically on WinXP
+you will have fully working DVD navigation in all players undepended on used renderer or OS
+auto AR switch acording to video source
-no DxVA support

Not all TVs have overscan (and those ones that have you usually have an option to turn it off). Overscan shouldn't be applied by default since not all content is mastered badly :)

+brightness correction - to make black = black, not gray.

If video black and white levels are already correct (on driver and renderer side) this will cause picture quality to go down.

    Hallo Hoborg,

i have a question about the sound.

I use a Denon AVR-1910 with hdmi to the htpc.
If i use tv, myKino, or music the volume is ok.
Some kinds of films with DTS or 5.1 are to quitly.
The Denon show "Stereo" when the volume is ok, "Direct" an its to silent.

I think its not SAF but i hope you have a idea.

    Greetings

Hi , firstable happy new year guys

Someone knows if Ati card of series 5x000 can be post process HD material ? I bought a 5770 few days ago but it did not arrived yet. With my 3850 the edge enhancement work only for Sd material. Now I'm using a sw chaim with ffdshow for decoding and post process (edge enhancement with unsharp filter) but I would to use a hw chain and switch to it definitely.

    Hi red5goahead!

The Ati 5000 has the following options in the Advanced Quality section for Video in the Catalyst Control Center:

    Edge-enhancement
    De-noise
    Mosquito Noise Reduction and
    Deblocking

Is this, what you are looking for?

    Regards,

Thanks. Ati 3850 also have Edge-enhancement and De-noise as option but does not working when resolution is greater thand SD (720x576 I guess). That's the answer i'm looking for the 5770.

Re: SAF v5.00 experimental (based on FFDShow DXVA decoder)

Hi, I am using the latest SAF 5.00 SVN101216, along with Core AVC Pro v2 for H264 DVB video. I have recently obtained a Blackgold BGT3620 DVB/T2 TV card. The HD channels have no sound, but picture seems fine. UK terestrial HD channels use AAC sound, & grapg Studio shows that a graph is build using Core Avc video codec & Monogram AAC codec for Audio. At best I get an occasional pop or click. Can anyone suggest how to resolve this. I have read that some folk have used a divx filter with some success but it comes with lots of additional junk software. I don't want to clutter my system up with junk if there is a better solution. Let me know if you need logs or further information. See my system for full details of hardware & software.

    Thanks

    Steve

Re: SAF v5.00 experimental (based on FFDShow DXVA decoder)

    Red5goahead,

The 5770 should be fine for those post processing options on HD.

I have a 5450 and a 5670, the 5450 does not have all the post processing options listed above, but the 5670 does.

It appears the options are down to the specific manufacturer and whether they "feel/believe" the card is capable of supporting them. The 5450 is the borderline type card - it seems anything above this have all the options (please correct me if I'm wrong)

There was also a bug with the ATI drivers at one point, where it would allow you to enable the options, but in reality the driver didn't use them (good one ATI/AMD!).

I'm sure you are aware of the "enable smooth playback" option - this is where the driver gets clever (well tries to) and will automatically use/not use the post processing options if it feels it can't while maintaining smooth playback. I am still playing around with the various ATI options to get a nice quality.

I am still struggling with (what I call) "blocking" everso often. The channel quality can look really good most of the time, then everso often I get some blocking (might be mosquito), then it will be fine. No dropped frames, nothing reported in the log files.

I'm not sure if its codec, or graphics driver.... My other half doesn;t even notice the "blocking" - she thinks its all fine - futher testing required. :D
