Re: SAF v5.00 experimental (based on FFDShow DXVA decoder)

I am trying to decypher what is causing my stuttering....this thread
....I do not have any of these problems when playing in MPC-HC or when played on an older installation of MP on Windows XP (VMR9).....
Could SAF be causing certain movies to stutter?

Well, starting with the most basic stuff, since you haven't said what you have tried so far:

    1. Do you have Aero enabled?

    2. What does GraphStudio show while playing the video in MediaPortal compared to MPC-HC?
(Please post screenshots of the graphs for each player.)

    3. While playing the video in MediaPortal, what does Shift+1 diagnostic show (screenshot)?

    4. What is CPU load during playback?
    5. What is GPU load? (I think ATI lets you monitor this?)

I have tried very little so far as no idea where to start due to most video's and TV already working perfectly. Hope some of the below will help. Highly appreciate your assistance here :).

    1. Aero is enabled, Yes.

    2. GraphStudio Screenshots:

Video 01 and 02 are two examples of movies that play (for a couple of minutes) and stutter (freeze for 1 second at a time) in MP. Video 03 is an example of a movie that plays smoothly in MP. All movies play smoothly in MPC-HC, VLC and GraphStudio.

    3. MediaPortal Diagnostic Screenshots:

    MediaPortal Stuttering Video 01: Here
    MediaPortal Stuttering Video 02: Here
    MediaPortal Smooth Video 03: Here

    4. Average CPU Load Whilst Playing Either Videos In MediaPortal: 25% - 35%
Average CPU Load Whilst Playing Either Videos In MPC-HC: 25 - 30%

    5. Average GPU Load Whilst Playing Either Videos In MediaPortal: 400 MHz (reported constant by ATI CCC)
Average GPU Load Whilst Playing Either Videos In MPC-HC: 400 MHz (reported constant by ATI CCC)

    6. I have also attached my EVR.log and MediaPortal.log which logged MP starting, the movie (Video 01) being played, then it automatically stopping. For the record, I have also tried disabling Refresh Rate Changer, this had no effect.

    MPC-HC Stuttering Video 01: Here

Ah... I misunderstood earlier, I thought your MPC-HC playback was always good, and I was hoping the graphs would show an obvious difference. Graphs for MePo vs MPC-HC are a bit different, and my guess would be the MPC-HC settings cause this. But nothing sets off alarm bells in my mind. I don't have direct experience with MKV/x264, so hopefully the experts can have a look and give some insight.

    7. Since this problem affects specific files in both players, try playing these files in VLC (VideoLAN player) to help verify they are good. VLC has internal codecs as I understand. (We want to rule out the files being corrupted.) If VLC plays these smoothly, then proceed with troubleshooting.

    8. Try playing the files directly from GraphStudio: File > Render Media File... > (choose your MKV file) > Play
If this has stuttering, you know the problem is not with the player (MePo or MPC). Need to delve further into codec or renderer or hardware.

Regarding hardware, interesting that the MP diagnostic screens actually look OK. When I was troubleshooting stuttering issues (with TS/MPEG2 content) there were tons of dropped frames and the Actual frame rate was noticeably lower than the Display framerate. Your screens do not show such signs of hardware choking. And your loads don't seem to be high. (Although I don't know how to assess GPU load -- maybe GPU-Z utility is better?)

    9. That said, is your GPU driver up to date?

    Hoborg,
Oh, and what about First install Saf 5 and second Haali ?

    I do so..

    best regards
    Harald

Haali will broke most of SAF settings. It can work, but you can have problem for example with HD audio, AVIs, PGS subtitles, audio/subtitle stream switching (CTRL+ALT+numpad 1/2) wont be working, etc...

Would SAF work properly if it was installed after Haali?

    Hi.
Haali is not compatible with SAF 5, you should uninsall it.

    EDIT:

VirtualDUB can't open the MKV :(
have a programm for that file-chop-job?

VirtualDub is AVI editor, it doesnot support MKV.
    Use MKVMerge co split MKVs.

    Hi Hoborg,

Since I installed the latest 100816 SVN - Channel preview in TVserver SETUP does not work correctly.

I ve only sounds and no picture is showing...

    Best Regards
    Harald

    Sorry, no idea :/

Could SAF be causing certain movies to stutter?

I doubt about it. Only known problem right now is BBC HD + PDVD10 and DXVA = droped frames. Win7 video decoder is only one working corectly.

What type of TV do you have - LCD or plasma?
If you have plasma (or any orher "flickering" screen), you need to chanfe refresh rates to match movie FPS and TV refresh rate to have stuter free playback.
LCD doesnot flicker, so there is no such issues.

I confirm this one. I cannot confirm it started with 100816 SVN, but I can confirm with this one I have no channel preview.

I have no idea how this preview should work, if it try to build graph, or what... Can anybody with working preview try to connect graphstudio to see how it is working?

This is done from a remote desktop, so far from ideal. With the version from 100811 it doesn't work either.

I completely removed SAF and then got this graph...

    Graph looks standard.
If you install SAF and run preview - is the gaph builded? There should be FFDShow in use for audio and video (if source is MPEG-2).

I tested that right before removing SAF and indeed, the graph is built and FFDSHOW in and out are connected. Struggling with my remote desktop right now. Will try to provide the graph later.

Re: SAF v5.00 experimental (based on FFDShow DXVA decoder)

Following graph was built with the version 100809b.

I cannot guarantee 100% sure that the image is not there, as I am on remote desktop. But without the SAF I did get image through my remote session. Here the image just stays on the gray background.

Edit: obvious difference - VMR input vs EVR input
