Doveman,

If that amp has Digital SPDIF in, you might concider just passing the bitstream to it for decoding. If the computer is lacking SPDIF, you can get a card for under $15.

I guess some people still do analog sound from the computer when just working with 2 channel stereo, but for digital multi-channel formats (like DD5.1 and DTS) ... the amp will work better (even if the speakers are small for now).

I'd love to get a AV amp one day, but unfortunately at the moment I'm just using my TV speakers for L&R and a Tripath stereo amp for the Centre. I'm also setting up an HTPC for my brother, who's even poorer than me so he'll have to use the analog outputs as well (again with his TV and a stereo amp), so it's quite important I get this working.

Nothing wrong with that ...

All my MePo client HTPCs and the ones I have built for my brother are older re-purposed computers.

But true 5.1 amps have been shipping for about 10 years now. The used market is flooded with good pre-HDMI amps.

Hello all,

I can't figure out how to configure SAF6 to output sound via SPDIF. I am NOT using MediaPortal; I am just using MPC-HC since it comes with the SAF6 installation.

Here is GraphStudio when playing a DTS media file: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v36/Im2bz2p345/help.png

Here are my ffdshow audio settings (which doesn't seem to be activate - it doesn't show up in my tray icon when playing any movies): http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v36/Im2bz2p345/help2.png

Here are my LAV Audio settings: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v36/Im2bz2p345/help3.png

I even tried to enable DTS-AC3 pass-through via the registry files located here (https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/804398-post1336.html), but that didn't work either. I know that my coaxial connection works, because in Windows when I click on the volume control, it sends the "ding" stereo sound via coaxial to my surround sound system.

Could someone guide me on how to configure SAF6 via SPDIF? It would be a BIG help!

I'm sure there's second-hand bargains to be had, but a quick look on e-bay suggests prices around £100+shipping and then you need a decent set of 5.1 speakers to make it worth it. Generally 5.1 amps aren't as good for music as a decent stereo amp, so neither my brother or myself are likely to want to disconnect our existing stereo amps and use the speakers we already have either and even £100 is way more than my brother can afford (and whilst I could spend that, I've really got far more important things to be saving up for). Plus we both live in flats with poor sound insulation, so wouldn't really be able to play stuff at levels where we'd properly appreciate a decent 5.1 system. It's just nice to be able to watch a film with a separate centre channel once in a while and switch the stereo between TV and amp (mainly for playing music without needing the TV on) without messing with cables or switchboxes, so that's all I'm trying to achieve really.

Firstly, you cannot passthrough HD audio over SPDIF, so disable all HD audio formats, enable only DTS and AC-3.

there may be conflicts with codecs already installed by the SAF?

Good question - you should ask in Online videos :)

"If you don't think you need the LAV Filters from this package or fear conflicts simply untick them during installation. Included is version 0.42."

SAF working on both x64 or x86.
If you can, use x86, it is a little faster.
Ther are no plans for SAF x64 or MediaPortal x64 (if i am not wrong).
