Server 2008 SQL problems (1 Viewer)

Hi guys,

Ive been running RC1 Tv Server on my 2008 box for a while and its been running fine. I thought Id try the RC2 release. I un-installed everything including MySQL to do a clean install. After completing the install and trying to start the configuration utility I get the following error.

I though it might be an issue with the old installation so did a fresh install of server 08 and had the exact same problem

If I try to connect with MySQL administrator i get the follow:

MYSQL Error 1045



Goggle that comes up with a ton of hits but I can see an obvious answer.

Is there a different version of MySQL with RC2 might cause this? Any suggestions?

as you can read in the ::requirements::, Microsoft Server OS'es are not supported.

regarding the basic MySQL issue, is the MySQL service even running?
and is the MySQL you use compatible with Server 2008?

Yeah I know its not supported but i thought id just pick peoples brains to see if theres any ideas. The MySQL service is running yes. Its version 5.0.45 thats downloaded as part of the installer that im using. It did work perfectly in RC1.

I did notice the default database name had changed from TvLibrary to MpTvDbRC2 and wondered if some other change happened

Well I think Ive solved it. I had to manually download MySQL 5.1 and install this manually first. I tested I was able to connect to it using MySQL Administrator which i was. Installed Media portal RC2 and just used the advanced install to tell it to use the existing MySQL service.

I think there might be something wrong with the way MP configures the MySQL installation that causes it not to work or that simply the version of MySQL thats installed (5.0) has problems with server 2008. Id be interested to hear from anyone else thats got similar set ups or as had the same problem

If you tell the installer, that it should use your exsisting SQL-Server, then it does not "configure" it at all.

Yeah exactly. I only had the problem if i let the mediaportal installer install MySQL automatically. If I installed it manually myself and just pointed mediaportal to the existing installation it worked fine.

if you allready have MySQL installed, and then selected to install "it again", then did it install a new "instance"?
were there 2 MySQL servers then running on your system?

if i install MP and on a system where no MySQL is present, and let the installer MySQL, then everything is working like a charm.
On WinXP and VISTA.

No this was a clean install. Remember that I manually installed MySQL 5.1 so it may be that the newer version solved the problem.

I dont know if its relevant but the password requirements of Server 2008 are very strict. When you try to install MS SQL it fails because it cannot create a service account with the default "MediaPortal" password. I dont think MySQL tries to create any accounts but i thought id mention it.

Yep - on some systems MySQL's installer seems to use wrong paths. I could reproduce that.
If you click "CTRL" in the login screen of the admin tools you can select "skip" to open the config.
Then you'll see that e.g. the config file "my.ini" is red because the installer defaulted to "my.cnf".
Judged by posts in mysql's forum the path to the service itself can be wrong as well (mysql instead of mysqld-nt).

I can confirm that the RC2 installer fails to set up MySql properly. I tried it on a vista sp1 system (never had mysql before) and I got the exact same message.

Ironically, I only tried mysql because after having RC2 installed and removed, I cant get RC1 to reinstall properly. Guess I'll be putting back a disk image to cure that.
