Yes, you can use the HD-PVR like a tuner with the aid of a blaster. Setup can be a bit of a pain but once it is working it should be reliable. Both recording and timeshifting are supported. Note the limitation: you can only record or watch the single channel that the STB is tuned to. When you have the blaster set up, the blaster will change the channel on the STB automatically when you change channels in MediaPortal. Here is a bit of a generic guide. I recommend that you use SchedulesDirect (version svn26) to get your EPG. It will make setup a *lot* easier. If you don't like the idea of paying for your EPG you can always switch to a free mc2xml option later although local OTA ATSC channels that are re-broadcast over cable may not have guide data available if you use mc2xml.
Rough setup steps (assuming you use Schedules Direct):
1. Install the latest version of MediaPortal with TV Server (the single-seat option is probably what you want for now).
2. Install the Schedules Direct TV Server plugin.
3. Install IRSS with the TVE3 Blaster plugin.
4. Sign up with Schedules Direct (20 day trial) and setup your channel lineup.
5. Use the SD TV Server plugin to create your channels - important options:
- "Automatically add new digital cable/satellite channels" (in the "Digital Cable/Satellite Channel Management" section) - enable
- "Country Selection for new channels" - use United States of America
- "External Video Input for new channels" - use YRYBY #1 for the component input on the HD-PVR
- "Include analog channels" - enable if you receive analog cable channels
6. Set up the blaster plugin with the aid of the generic guide that I linked above - if IRSS doesn't support your STB then you'll need to find an external program that IRSS can run to send button presses to the STB.
