Share Local Media? (1 Viewer)

Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction. Maybe I'm confused and this isn't possible however what I would like to do is setup Media Portal on a central computer (server) and allow other computers on my LAN to access the local media (movies and tv episodes) and stream it. I know I can simply create network shares (already have that) but I want to also make use of the Media Portal interface or at least a watered-down version of it so that when I watch a movie it is recorded as watched...etc and also see the nice info about the movie.

I've played around with TV-Server but I don't seem to be able to get this working, or if this even will allow me to do this.

Not sure I understand what you want, You can install MP on as many computers as you want and just add the network location of the recorded shows and all other video files, many people do this including myself.

Are you referring to the idea of the video showing watched on all computers after its watched from only 1?

MP 1 does not share local media. The TV server streams (as the name implies) TV (and Radio). For local media, you need shares and MP on all the client and point the clients to the shares. If you prefer central databases, just search the forum for that.

MP 2 will allow useage of media from each system on each system. So you can use media from your server, your bedroom client and your living room client on each client.

I believe based on mbuzina's reply that what I am trying to do is not possible at this time. But for clarification to ryan20021982 just in case I will try to explain some more.

Basically I have a lan of some computers which all access their information from a file server.

I would like to use the file server to run Media Portal (thats easy) and have the LAN computers all point to the file server to browse the media via a web interface of some kind. Reason being is indexing the files would be a lot faster accessing the local drive as apposed to over the LAN, while also enabling me to maintain a single database.

Text Diagram:

[LAN Computers] --> http://mediaserver:8080 --> browse web view of media catalog --> play video/other media through the LAN.

Ideally the web interface would simply be just an interface and streaming would still go as normal through a network share seemlessly (invisible) to the client.

Anyway I thought it was already possible. If not I suppose this would be an idea for anyone interested and the knowledge to design it.
