Tested so far with QuickTimeAlt 2.6 as well as a couple of different versions of QuickTime.
Sound is fine using these applications directly, but playing the same file in MP yields no sound.
Tried dScaler, MPA & ffdshow codecs in MP, all with the same results.

    P.S.
Additional details can be found in this post.

This is not a bug in MediaPortal
The Problem is that DirectShow chooses the wrong or none audio renderer.

I have the same issue here. If i play a mov in MP or WMP, then DirectShow always chooses an audio filter which is not able to provide sound.
I fixed this issue here, by setting the MPA codec to a "very high Merit" using the "FilterManager" tool.

    Chris,
Sorry, but I don't full understand your response. If the selection of renderer is the problem, shouldn't it be enough to directly select the renderer instead of leaving the choice to DirectShow (see attached screenshot)? Unfortunately, this didn't change anything. Based on a response to another thread I am now using ffdshow, but my original choice was dscaler. The Filter Manager alrady shows both of these at "PREFERRED". What do you mean by "very high"?

The settings you do in there are not usedwhen you play a mov. Windows chooses the video and audio filters based on their merits.

if you play a recorded mpg/ts files, MP will use the codecs as defined there.

take a look at the zip file you attached to your first post, it includes a jpg which shows what the graph looks like.

as video filter some "ati thingy" is connected
and to the audio pin no audio codec is connected, so no suiteable codec was found.

Sorry, I don't have anything small enough. I'll need some time to cut something.

The graphic is indeed very revealing: I didn't even realize it was there!
How can I look at it without doing an MP logs collection?

Unfortunately, I still don't get it. If this is all Windows doing, and not affected by MP, why is it that the MOV files play fine outside of MP?

Anyway, I am trying to put MPA merit as high as it goes.
Does the attached graphic show what you are suggesting?

P.S. After setting the merit of MPA to the highest setting Filter Manager offers (see screenshot), the behaviour is still the same:
No sound from MOVs in MP, sound plays OK in QuickTime.

If you downloaded it somewhere, a link would be good as well.
These MOV files are all from my wife's camera. I tried to cut them using MP's video editor, but it doesn't even see the files. QuickTime doesn't help either; I guess they reserve this functionality for paying customers.
I really appreciate your efforts to help! Any other suggestions?

P.S. After searching further, I found one small enough to post.

Just tested this file and here is what i found out locally.
I have QuiteTimeAlternative installed, and generally speaking no issues with playing mov files (such as the Trailers from apple.com)

    • tried to create a graph in grahpedit -> does not build, missing codecs
    • tried to play your file in WindowsMediaPlayer -> does not play, missing codecs
    • tried to play the file in MPC (comes with QTalt) -> video plays

My conclusion is that this files sadly does not play out of the box in Windows (using DirectShow) after just installting QTalt.
It works in MPC because it is "designed" to work with any kind of mov file.

Maybe hoborg has some further ideas about which filter you are missing on your system to be able to play that file.
I am sadly out of ideas. :(
