Streaming over Wi-Fi not watchable (1 Viewer)

Hi, I upgraded to N wireless. Usually connecting at 300mbit, sometimes 270. Only 1 ceiling inbetween client and router. Both client and router are MIMO. Client is PCI.

Every 30 secs or so (very random.. range is 5secs-2mins), the picture freezes or garbles for about 2 seconds. Sometimes I hear a horrible digital screetch too.

I see a few of these "MPEG PES video-stream" packets in Wireshark, all say Malformed. Although this could easily be false information (if wireshark is buggy analyzing this format).

I view this as a bug, because I can copy 8 gig files over this wifi very fast and very reliable (using XP's loss-intolerant Explorer.exe).

Ideas to fix:
* Allow for RTP transport over TCP or HTTP. Live555 - VideoLAN Wiki indicates TVE3's rtsp server code can do this.
* Increase or allow user to increase some sort of buffers to allow for a wifi hiccup / drop. I don't mind live tv being delayed by another 3 seconds or so.
* Upgrade Live555, I see they have a 9 day old build (not sure if you keep in sync with these releases). Index of /liveMedia/public

What happens if you browse to the share in windows and play the files using windows media player etc? I am not very fimiliar with MediaPortal yet but network video is usually buffered on the player pc's hdd to prevent the freezes etc. Is there a buffer setting that exists in MP that you can adjust?

For the networking portion you shouldnt be using http unless you are pulling content from a streaming server ie windows media server etc so you would be using RTP over TCP/IP. I would def suggest enabling this if you can. But its only my humble opinion. Increasing the buffer size will usually fix the problem unless you are playing a huge move from the remote share.

ok playing the \\master\c$\Program Files\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal TV Server\live1-0.ts.tsbuffer1.ts over wifi in wmp11 plays perfectly.

I dont know of any buffer setting I can change; would love to know.

BTW: watching rtsp with mediaportal uses UDP/IP not TCP/IP. that's possibly why i have problems; some packets get lost. Where TCP they wouldn't get lost, just delayed by a few seconds.

Ok I am now stepping past my knowledge of streming media. Need to know more about the program itself to be of any use. I second the assumption that UDP/IP could be the issue. Try manually setting your transmission rate on your router for wireless to below the lowest value that you have seen when connected from the client. Wireless has a habit of renegotiating when a different (slower of faster) connections speed is available. This would def cause UDP xfers to pause, scramble and restart. You are correct when that happens TCP/IP reconnects and resumes better. My advise could be useless but hopefully its a quick fix for you.

Just tried reducing the speed to 130 mbit. It seems a lot better, but certainly is still unwatchable. Well, watchable, just not enjoyable at all.

Even so, if it had worked, I want 300mbit not 25mbit

Any word from a dev whether this is deemed a bug or not? Obviously i am hoping it is a bug!!

Good luck to you. Maybe there is a way to enable tcp/ip instead of UDP.

Well upgrading to the latest live555 source would be great. However we've currently no resources to check and re-merge the changes done to those.

Binary, I had a similar issue playing movies over a wireless connection. Movies were skipping forward :/ I installed CCCP Combined Community Codec Pack , after which the issue was resolved. Give it a shot.

I have exactly the same problems.
Maybe you should have a look at mythTV. I had many problems with this software but I never had stutterings.
