It was connecting at gigabit speed, when I copied the movie to the local hard drive I was getting 60+ MB/s. Anyway, I think it's sorted now after updating the network driver from the gigabyte website.

Thanks, the updated driver fixed the problem (at least so far). I have IPv6 turned off on my clients as it causes long delays in connecting to the tv server.

i'm not sure what nic your board has but i have had lots of problems with Broadcom on board nic's running on both gigabit and 100mb full when left of automatic. try switching it to manually run at 1000mbit in the nic settings.

It still seems to be working this morning only dropping the very occasional frame, but I suspect that's something to do with the frame rate being very slightly off (a known problem with the Sandy Bridge GPU and 24p source material).

So, I'm very happy (for now) that I can just use the power button on my MCE remote and not have to power it down completely.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The community is what makes MediaPortal great, well even greater than it already is :)
