Re: AW: Re: Switching MP2 to Git

Hi all!

In the last days and weeks, we evaluated Git for MP2 and we did lots of tests and lots of work to prepare the final switch. We're planning to switch to Git on https://github.com/ the next days. The final switch date depends on how many problems still arise.

During the switch, our internal MP2 SVN server is set to read-only and the contents are migrated to the new Git location. After the switch, we'll publish the new sourcecode location.

To get the sources from the new Git server, you need to install the Git windows client. There is a very good book which tells you the concepts behind Git: Pro Git - Pro Git Book

Cheers,
Albert

As a developer I'd like to know what benefits you think GIT has over SVN? Just curious since I haven't yet used GIT :)

www.google.com

I belive it's a lack of respect to answer a good question with that kind of reply. I don't understand why you as a leader of this project continously use a rather harsh tone against firendly forumusers who are just curious.
He just wanted to know what YOU think are the benefits. How would he ever find that on google?
Be nice!

Sorry but how is it Alberts job to educate people on the advantages/disadvantages of git over svn. We had that discussion internally when we decided if we wanted to switch.

The answer might have sounded harsh but jfgi was a valid response imo.

I think that isn't the right place here to discuss this and blame Albert in public... This is like pointing with the finger at somebody, that is just not polite.

I don't have any bad experience with Albert, his answers are often short and maybe that is the reason that it sounds sometimes a bit harsh, but I never recognized it that way...

Thank you both, DieBagger and FreakyJ. And many apologies to all if my answer sounded unfriendly; it wasn't meant that way. I just don't have enough time to do my real life job, all the development for MP2, development management, team coordination, testing and discussing the movement to Git and then explaining Git to the public when there is enough material in the internet about that topic. And I had a lot of stress the last weeks.
People IRL know me and they know that I often have short answers which sound harsh; but they also know that it's just my style. But I understand that here in our forum, people don't know that off course and so I'll try to seem more polite in the future ;-)

    That's a good reply.
Sorry if I overreacted. I know how easily people get misunderstood at the internet and I should have consider that before I wrote my previous post.

We would see a little Albert jumping around in a giant net of modified files ^^ (I'm sorry, of course there would be all the other great developers too.)

    Anyway, a very cool video.
