the problem with the current engine is that you definately have to start by copying an existing skin (99.9% B2)... then things get complex (what is "your" design, what is B2 idea?)
thats exactly what we have that skin for.
you must not expect any probelms (copyright). as long as you do not try to sell it, you can do everything with it ;)
if at least there was a comprehensive list of what changes in B2 between SVN...
currently its been worked on a system to store changes in svn code that will effect skins and may require updates of the skin. (similar to a changelog)
no timeframe for that at this moment.

Guys once the graphics and theme is done, it is not so hard pick them up again, it doesnt have to be the original skin author. Just copy the xml from blue2 and update the skin, there is instructions on the wiki for the xml structure and deleting the xml, and png packages each time :)

It really is possible for any of you to edit these skins and learn the xml language, its not even a programming languge, just a series of tags. Just pop along to irc and have a chat about it, there is a dedicated skin channel.

Installing plugins to an "unsupported skin" (like PMIII) is not very userfriendly at all. Usually I try to use the XML made for B2 - and it usually works well (with PMIII).

I guess many of these modifications in SVN (like the album-size fixes etc.) and plugins-XMLs would work for other skins ... why not release a archive with XML-files updated than can be used (?) by other sikns.

PS: I will add more skins (like B2-mods)

note: this is a general post, it is not targeted to any specific person(s)! :)

what i find quite "funny" sometimes is that many ppl start to moan if something is no longer maintaned/supported.

it seems that many ppl have forgotten that this is an open source project which means that everyone has direct access to the sources.
but to moan is easier that trying to learn how something works and fix it on their own.

In other words, EVERYONE can contribute to this great project!

So grab one of this "dead" skins, start a new forum thread and fix/improve it! :)

this thread is a good idea in my option. hopefully some ppl will grab a few of this skins an continue them.
(drop the original autor a email before you do so ;) )

as long as you do not rip the skin apart or use gfx of one 3rd party skin to create your own, there should not be any issue.

in the worst case the author of the skin may ask you to stop your work.

I really agree with chris (infinityloop) but I wish that skin authors would release their source (the .psd or original graphic layers) to help with the continuation of their work. THAT is the reason some of these skns are dead - it would take way too much time to reconstruction some of the graphics without the layers. Since this is an opensource project I wish that all plugins and skins would be released with all the material needed to recreate. Without the source you get a dead plugin or skin when MP makes major changes!

I think that one of the "negative points" of MP is that is very dificult to do a skin integrated with all plugins, and work in the next releases of MP, due to the big number of changes on every release..

If you look at the MP skin section, there are only a few skins that could be installed on the last stable release (not SVN) and only one or two of these skins aren't in beta status...

In winamp, for example, all the skins are compatible with all minor versions (skins for 1.0v works on the 1.2, 1.3, etc...), I think this could be the way that MP will follow for the skin implementation.

I'm not a designer nor developer, only a final user, I like all the thinks that MP can bring to me, but i know many people that don't use MP because they say that MP don't look "profesional", etc. But as you know there are people that prefer to buy a car with a nice look than a functional or power car... and i think that show to these people that a powerful car could be beatiful too, isn't impossible.
