Please keep at this because your experience (YAG) is a mirror reflection of mine.
I am basically in the same boat as you

My TV is here in the next few days, I need to get this machine in some sort of working order.

:( I uninstalled everything, followed the instructions, yet when I run mediaportal on the server machine I do not get asked for an IP address - it just works (shows TV)
thats okay, because the plugin looks on your local client first.
if it can not find a tv-server, i will ask you for the hostname.

    so you can watch MyTV?

    2. When I first run mediaportal I essentially configure nothing (TV channels scan etc...) I expect these to be read from the TVserver
you must not add tv-cards in mediaportal.exe

    3. When I start mediaportal there is therefor no My TV - My TV is under My Plugins correct?
i have noticed that sometimes too. seems to be a glitch. does not occur always.
you can change that in configuration.exe -> MyTV plugin -> List on Homescreen

Again, on the server machine, the client works - but does not imply anywhere that it is using a server/ip address/host name. On the other machine running the client only with the server plugin I get nothing - only SQL connection errors in the log file.
Even after modifying gentle.config and mediaportal.xml to include the TVserver info I get the same old can't connect to SQL server.
    erm

if you have followed my installation steps, then the clients in the LAN where you install MediaPortal + SVN + tvserver-client, have to show you the screen where to enter the TV-Server hostname/ip.

and if you followed the install steps for the tv-server, then everything is set correctly in the gentle.config, no need to manualy add anything.

If you want i can check your client installation when you give me VNC or rdp access. just send me a pm :)

OK. I again uninstalled *everything* on the server machine (tv server, mediaportal, plugin, sql server), deleted the directories left behind and ran registry searches to delete any trace of anything...

Reinstalled and I am now a step further - the client machine connects to the database so I can get the TV guide. No image though... I only get a black screen and the software freezes. Error log looks different now (see attached).

    New ideas?

Looks to me like a video card issue, maybe you should update your video card drivers and reinstall directx?

I have exactly the same problem. Everything is configured correctly, I'm pretty sure.
On the server machine I get TV from the TVserver3. But I'm unable the get tv on the client. The client seems to be unable to connect to the SQL database.

The SQL server browser service is running
I allowed remote connections in the SQL serface area configuration
I use REAL ip's everywhere in configuration (client and server)

    edit: my Gentle.config line
    Code:
    <DefaultProvider name="SQLServer" connectionString="Password=XXXXXX;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=sa;Initial Catalog=TvLibrary;Data Source=10.1.1.248\SQLEXPRESS;" />

Here is my error.log (from the client PC, not the server PC).

It may not apply to you guys but when I first installed the TV service it didn't choose my ethernet interface to stream over by default. I happen to have a firewire port on my server MB which is allocated an ip address by windows and the TV service seemed to bind to this address for streaming.

I could still connect to the SQL service so channel lists etc were visible on the client but no A/V.

You can choose which ip address the TV service uses if you select the server name under the 'TV Servers' branch in the management console and click the 'edit' button.

    Same problem...

    Hi,

    I have same problem...
The error.log on the client contain :
    --
    2006-12-22 20:16:22.265625 [ERROR][MPMain]: Exception :Error: DatabaseUnavailableUnclassified
Gentle.Common.GentleException: The database backend (provider SQLServer) could not be reached.
Check the connection string: Password=nouchka;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=sa;Initial Catalog=TvLibrary;Data Source=mazoubox\SQLEXPRESS; ---> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
    --

    mazoubox is the TV server.
    I don't know why it doesn't work.
On the local Machine it's work correctly, not by the network.

mazou, did you try to disable all firewalls (including the XP included one) on the server PC? If not, give it a try for testing :)
