I am building a HTPC and am evaluating different media players. I currently use XBMC so though Media Portal would be a good place to start :)

One thing though - how do I turn off the annoying bounce effect on the main menu. When scrolling through items, the scrolling overshoots slightly and springs back, sometimes called the "move effect". It slows navigation down considerably - on XBMC with the default Project Mayhem skin you can flick between items really fast. In fact, that's the way MP works too in most places, just not the main menu.

Ha!!!

Welcome.. I'm from XBMC too, and i miss it :( but i needed my HD.

I know exactly what you mean, the bounce was terrible. I recently upgraded everything to 0.2.3RC1 and Revision 1.16 and the bouncing stopped.

I dont know if it was taken out, or if the skin did it, or if i finally clicked on just the right option, but it stopped, and made me so happy.

Make sure you have Enable Animations UNCHECKED. I had it unchecked before but it still bobbled. Maybe, now the option effects the home screen.

Your post amused me, its nice to see someone else was totally annoyed by that, I hated it.

Nice to know I'm not the only one. The weird thing is that every media centre app apart from the MS one does it. I mean, how silly - menus are for navigating options, so they do their best to slow down navigation speed.

If only the Linux XBMC port was usable. I'd gladly forgo TV functions for an interface as slick and easy as XBMC. Instant on, simple set-up, excellent picture quality, no codecs, "just works" functionality... and on a Celeron 733 and 64MB RAM.

tell me about it man. I moved to HD so i needed something with more power. I dont want to turn this into a hating session, but man i miss xbmc. The design and reliability was through the roof.

I tried xbmc on linux the other day and its just not there, and the team is tiny. So its gonna be a while.

The nice thing about mediaportal though is that we have ffdshow, which has great upscaling, and the tv-series plugin is really really nice.

I dont use any of these media centers for tv, they all pretty much suck for hd. I just use them for MY movies/tv rips.

But really, dont waste your time, mediaportal is the best option on a pc. I've tried them all.
