I am building a HTPC and am evaluating different media players. I currently use XBMC so though Media Portal would be a good place to start
One thing though - how do I turn off the annoying bounce effect on the main menu. When scrolling through items, the scrolling overshoots slightly and springs back, sometimes called the "move effect". It slows navigation down considerably - on XBMC with the default Project Mayhem skin you can flick between items really fast. In fact, that's the way MP works too in most places, just not the main menu.
